It’s amazing the roads that a tune follows before becoming a hit...or a miss. :)

Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” is a classic, recorded by almost everybody, to include Clark Gable, Peter Boyle with Gene Wilder and a German act named Taco. It’s fun trying to figure out what the time signature is.

From the 1937 MGM film “Idiot’s Delight”.

Cloark Gable: “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

From the 1974 film “Young Frankenstein”.

Gene Wilder & Peter Boyle: “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

Irvin was 95 and living in his multimillion dollar Upper West Side apartment when this song came out. After his housekeeper showed him this music video, he observed, “Sure looks like a fag to me!” (See if you don't agree with Irving.)

Taco: “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

Yep...and his piano player too! LOL!

Loved the Clark Gable one, though. He was such a cad. :)

Everybody loved ol' Clark. He and David Niven used to go elk hunting in Oregon every year.

Victor Fleming had to get him drunk for that scene in "Gone with the Wind" where Rhett was required to cry at the death of Bonnie Blue Butler. Fleming matched Gable shot for shot until he thought Gable was drunk enough to cry on cue. It worked.

John Huston used the same technique to get Gable to cry in his last film, ‘The Misfits”.
