When I was renovating my business, I wanted to put a water fountain in...
But was told if I put a regular one in, I would have to also put a lower handicapped one in too.
Well.. I didn’t want to pay for two water fountains, and since I wasn’t required to have one to begin with just decided not to put ANY in.
Thanks big government!
Yep, the ADA caused that all over.
It’s why it’s very hard to find a drinking fountain anymore except in big chain stores who could afford the multiple ones.
It’s also why it’s harder to find a restroom in many places which aren’t required to have publically available restrooms. It used to be you could ask to use the restroom in many businesses and they were available. But now they can’t be available or they’d have to do many expensive upgrades.
Ditto a lot of other things that have virtually disappeared. For example coat/purse hooks in restrooms. The lower ones were swinging into people’s eyes, faces etc and causing injury so they just took them out. The solution? Take them all out. Now you have to hold onto your shopping bags, purses, coats etc while you try to go to the toilet.
Why didn’t you just tell them that you don’t serve handicapped people so you wouldn’t need the smaller fountain and it was also the reason you ripped out the wheelchair ramp last year?
When a friend of mine opened a martial arts studio, he was required to add a wheelchair ramp out front and convert the bathroom to handicap friendly, for, you know, all those wheelchair-bound martial artists.
