Planned fallen soldier monument in Mich. veterans memorial causes controversy over prominence of gun

A veterans group wants to complete the Veterans Memorial in Milford's Central Park with a fallen soldier monument, but the Village Council isn't sure the piece — which features a pair of boots and a helmet atop an M-16 rife — is an appropriate focal point for the park.

Bear Hall, founder and chairman of the local Friends of American Veterans (FAV), approached the council earlier this month hoping for approval of the plan.

The group wants to place a fallen solder memorial – also known as a battle field cross – at the end of the brick paver walkway leading out from the current Veterans Memorial near the main park entrance.

The plan calls for an 8-foot-tall monument, including a 43-inch granite base matching the current memorial, topped by a 52-inch sculpture of the fallen soldier memorial: a bronze sculpture of combat boots, rifle – an M-16 – with dog tags and a helmet on top.

It's the gun that has raised concerns among some members of the parks commission and the village council.

The proposal went to the Village Parks and Recreation Commission last month for consideration. The commissioners, said Village Manager Christian Wuerth, did not make a recommendation to council on the matter.

"There was some concern from a couple of members regarding the specific memorial that's proposed," said Wuerth. "Specifically, the gun. They understood the history of (the memorial) and the meaning of it, they just didn't feel it was appropriate for that specific location."

Yeah we hate to break it to you bleeding heat, fake tear, faggots but violence is sometimes necessary to protect oneself and secure your country from those who wish to do great harm or kill your people en masse. Now go back to your gay porn and shut the hell up...

Only a treasonous, draft-dodging enemy sympathizer would oppose such a poingnant and appropriate memorial for our honored dead.

Which is an accurate description of our current set of Democrat leaders.

Let these sissy idiots be concerned and left them fight the next war themselves—with sticks.

Problem is the mentality of some on the Town Council.
One moron on the council named Aubry referred to the rifle as a machine gun.....

Outside of City Hall in Mason, MI, (Just south of Lansing) they installed eight wooden carved statues of soldiers representing each of the major wars that the United States military have been involved in.

Our small town is attempting to redesign the 4 parks a the main 4 corners. There will be a riot if anything is removed. The locals mean business about the war memorials in our town.

So, which eight wars did they pick?

Revolutionary, 1812, Indian wars, Mexican war, Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection, First World war, various central American interventions, Second World War, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada Invasion, Panama Invasion, First Gulf War, Second Gulf War and Afghanistan, Ongoing “War on Terror”.

I would call at least 11 “major”, and I probably missed some.

How about the Cold War? Or does that include Korea, Vietnam, and the Grenada Invasion?

Grenada invasion?!? Are you going to include playing heavy metal at Manuel Noriega?

As far as I can tell, the eight represented are the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and Gulf War I/Gulf War II.

I'm only about 15 miles from those statues, and the area has been nicely landscaped after that picture was taken. I got them from this website: http://jfcampbell.us/masonmi/2014/2014_06_08.htm#X

If I think about it, next time I'm in Mason I'll try to read the plaques and see what's what.

The Panama invasion has a close personal connection. I was there for five years, and missed it by a month! I admit that it ended quickly, with fairly low casualties...

I would call the Mexican war a major war, as I would the Spanish-American war (we could include the Philippine insurrection in that...)

I served from 1977 to 1981, and it’s the only four year stretch that was NOT eligible to join the American Leigon, VFW, etc. since the end of the Korean War.

Heck, I did not think I was eligible, since I never served overseas (on active duty).

I fit in the “Vietnam Veteran” category, as the war was still active when I was in service, but they had stopped sending people over...
