Marco Rubio: I’d attend a gay wedding
Fusion ^ | 4/15/15 | Brett LoGiurato

Posted on 04/16/2015 3:35:16 AM PDT by markomalley

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), the newest and youngest official Republican candidate for president, has said he believes marriage should be “traditional”—between a man and a woman.

So Fusion’s Jorge Ramos asked him: If someone in his family or on his staff were gay and getting married, would he attend the wedding?

“If it’s somebody in my life that I care for, of course I would,” Rubio told Ramos in an interview on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to hurt them simply because I disagree with a choice they’ve made or because I disagree with a decision they’ve made, or whatever it may be,” he added. “Ultimately, if someone that you care for and is part of your family has decided to move in one direction or another or feels that way because of who they love, you respect that because you love them.”

Rubio spoke with Ramos about a variety of issues, including marriage equality, immigration reform, climate change, President Barack Obama’s move to normalize relations with Cuba, and which rapper or singer he’d like to perform at his potential 2017 inauguration.

In the early throes of his campaign, Rubio has positioned himself as the candidate of “tomorrow.” He has cast himself as a young, fresh alternative to other Republicans and to likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who he referred to in his announcement speech as the candidate of “yesterday.”

But his stance on gay marriage has led to questions on whether he’s more out of touch than Clinton with young people on certain issues. According to a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 74 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds said they were in favor of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. On Tuesday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper called Rubio “the candidate of yesterday” on the issue of marriage equality.

Rubio said that while he personally opposes gay marriage, he would encourage people in favor to petition their state legislatures to permit same-sex marriages. He does not think the decision should be left up to courts, he said.

“I would point out that we live in a free society,” Rubio said. “If people want to change the definition of marriage, they should petition their state legislature, and they can have that debate in the political arena. Who I don’t think should be redefining marriage is the court system.”

Rubio, who is Catholic, noted that his faith also teaches that divorce is wrong, and he drew on that as a comparison to his personal feelings on gay marriage.

“But again, as I said, I’m a member of the Catholic faith that teaches, for example, that divorce is wrong,” Rubio said. “But if someone gets divorced, I’m not going to stop loving them or having them a part of our lives.”

I understand what he saying. Should Catholics shun divorced people? I think not. Of course one needs to be very very careful about not CELEBRATING sinful actions, too. For this reason, I think his position on attending a wedding might be a bridge too far. But I still think he is a decent guy.

Looks like the “gotcha” question directed at Rubio did it’s job in helping the Democrats. Can’t wait until this question resurfaces in a Republican Presidential Debate.

Hard to believe the Election is still 18 Months away.

At this rate, there won’t be a Republican left to oppose the Clinton / Warren Ticket.

The bottom line is that there is no such thing as a homosexual marriage.

Correct, it's a ploy used by sodomites to try to convince themselves that their unhealthy and immoral lifestyle is acceptable to God.

However, Satan is using them to try to make marriage meaningless for the rest of us.

I wonder how many of them are happy, since the two couples that I am aware of are not.

Those in a good marriage know how blessed it is! All the darkness all around only makes the light seem brighter.

Crumbled, crashed, broken, forsaken marriages only SEEM like a reason to abandon marriage. And then you see a good one, and you immediately know why all those failures are missing out one of God's most beautiful gifts.

With God the only exception, my wife is the best thing in my life...and the truth is that even she is part of God's plan of good for me.

Your post should be the last word on this thread. It brilliantly and succinctly encapsulates what is so wrong about what Sen Rubio said. It (what he said) says a lot about his character. And it’s not good.

If it was male-male or female- female, it was not a wedding. Ti takes one male and one female to wed.

But would he force a pizza place to cater it against their religious beliefs?

But nobody who wouldn’t answer that question - “would you attend a “gay wedding” - in the affirmative is going to be elected President in 2016, or afterwards. That’s a fact.

America’s been overwhelmed by “nondiscrimination”. That’s a serious, perhaps fatal, collective mistake. But it’s the truth.

Nobody is pro “gay marriage”. It’s what Tom Wolfe called a “social Xray”. It’s a screening test for “discriminators”.And nobody who flunks is going to win.

All of that is very good and bears repeating.

FReepers who would refuse to attend their gay coworkers or boss’s or niece’s wedding are in the minority of Americans in 2015. 95% of Americans under 30 would definitely attend.

And if Cruz gets asked if he would attend a friend’s gay wedding, he’d better say yes or he is FINISHED. No doubt every busy pol has gays working for him.

In other words, America is generationally transforming into a morally degenerate nation. A nation that embraces and celebrates deviancy and evil.

Yep, I can’t argue with that.

It just occurred to me that Rubio's Straw Man (“If someone gets divorced, I’m not going to stop loving them”) is neither a statement of principle (it's vacuous) NOR a gaffe. I think it may be perfectly deliberate and perfectly cynical.

He knows that what he said is a stupid non sequitur, but he also knows that the Great American Electorate cannot hold two thoughts in its head without one of them leaking out its ears. They just hear "love" and think "Oh well then, that's all right...."

The worst thing about American Democracy is that we get what we deserve.

Unfortunately, that’s true. It’s also Bible prophecy that widespread acceptance of homosexuality would be the norm during the end times.
