The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives classification of pistol grip only firearms with 14 barrels that fire shotgun shells and are over 26 in overall length as neither shotguns nor National Firearms Act Destructive Devices or Any Other Weapons has created a situation wherein the agency must either quietly save face or have it exposed that untold numbers of good faith gun owners currently legally possess firearms problematic for the government to allow. In order for that status quo to continue, ATF, in conjunction with certain members of Congress and lobbying interests, is working at tweaking its definition of the arbitrary sporting use term, insider sources tell Gun Rights Examiner. And with that will come a push to expand definitions to allow for further importation bans on certain types of presently legal ammunition.
While many of the details of the deal being worked on are sketchy, informed sources are of the opinion that the tradeoff is a backroom effort that includes undisclosed bipartisan members of Congress, ATF acting on behalf of itself, the Department of Justice and the administration, and firearms lobbyists who have traditionally been part of the behind-the-scenes development, if not outright ghostwriting of classifications and rules affecting the industry and gun owners.
This is hardly the first time ATF has found itself needing to reverse prior decisions.

Sporting use? Oh right, the sporting amendment.
Continuing to work to disarm the LAW ABIDING FREE American public.
Note this comment:
If so, that will be more reaction than that shown by the so-called "mainstream gun rights press" in evidence in the NRA pressroom. Since David Codrea's story broke two days ago, they have been, as near as this reporter could tell, studiously, deliberately incurious about the implications of these revelations. Copies of David's story have been distributed to them since it broke and most seem to have ignored it and few asked me any questions about it.
The NRA continues to disappoint. They need to be doing their best to eliminate this "sporting use" nonsense, instead of helping the BATFE further it!
“is working at tweaking its definition of the arbitrary sporting use term,”
This is a lie and total disinformation. The 2nd amendment
has nothing to do with “sporting use”. The purpose of
the second amendment is to protect us from foreign invasion
and our own government should it become unconstitutional.
So in essence this tweaking is just an out right lie to
subvert the 2nd amendment.

Contact JPFO and GOA to make sure they are aware of this. (Yes, I have so.)
Yup. Note Mike V's report of how upset people seems to be that their little secret has been uncovered.
It boggles the mind that anyone would consider the sporting use idea or the militia idea.
All the amendments are about guaranteed individual rights; free exercise of speech/religion, protection against government intrusion and property seizure, etc. And yet some think people risked their lives to break from Britain and thought hunting was the second most important thing behind being able to say what you thought and worship the way you believed? Even sillier is the idea that there needed to be an amendment that recognized a government’s right to form an army?
No wonder people vote the way they vote.
Don’t we have a republican controlled congress? What are they doing? This is their chance to act like leaders and BATF (Ban the ATF).
The second amendment is about hunting as much as the first amendment is about playing Scrabble. Henry Bowman.
Everyone.
You have to read the link at post #4.
Great follow up article exposing the absolute corruption around this, and it names names.
Enjoy.

Bump!
It won't happen -- the NRA is to gun rights as the Republican party is to conservatism.
The ATF: Searching for “solutions” to non-existent problems. I just hope that President Cruz removes at least “the F” from their name, and requires that the agency reduce its staff accordingly. I for one would like to see these people in the UE line.
For a great deal of the history of this nation, the private citizen was better equipped than government conscripts. Not anymore.
The military specification for M855, called for a round capable of completely passing through low carbon plate steel 0.135 inches thick at 656 yard for a reason.
Always aim for the head.
I carefully complied with the rule that my home defense shotgun barrel had to be at least 18” long.
If the federal bureau-mugwumps want to pass an ex post facto law—being no more a legislative body than Obama—they are welcome to come to IN to try and take it from me.
The Obama nightmare continues ..... Live FRee or die, FRiends.
Just a thought here...
As usual it seems to me that the use of regulation and occasionally law is usually in response to a change in thought or more often now-a-days technology.
What that means to me is that they attempts to ‘ban’, restrict or otherwise change the usage or acquisition of various new types of firearms are in the end going to be fruitless and mostly exacerbating the ‘negative’ feelings of the public.
What would the ATF do if someone developed a rail-gun rifle or pistol? What about a AR variant that used .410 ammunition? Things like that and that doesn’t even take into account more advanced forms of the 3D Printer that could manufacture ammunition of your specific design in Job Lots.
In the end I guess my primary points are that the Government and its myriad agencies are reactive for the most part. And their reaction(s) tend to push the hot-buttons of various people and groups in our society. That my FRiends is not a good thing at all. It tends to make it almost certain that someone, anyone, is going to do ‘something’ that will in turn cause our entire system to crack and breakdown.
Which I believe in all candor is exactly what our enemies, both foreign and domestic desire. How much easier to conquer a nation such as ours as when it is utterly divided internally?
