Pond turtle found along West Coast, including Bay Area, could get special status

The federal government will investigate whether the western pond turtle -- found along the West Coast, including in Marin -- should get Endangered Species Act protection.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct a one-year status review on the turtle, which faces declines of up to 99 percent in some areas.

"As the West Coast's only native freshwater turtles, western pond turtles are integral to the wild places where they live," said Collette Adkins, biologist for the Center for Biological Diversity, which petitioned the agency for the protection in 2012. "Threats like habitat destruction from urbanization and agriculture are driving western pond turtles toward extinction."

The turtles are already listed as a "species of special concern" in California.

I think Republican lawmakers should get endangered species protection in Kalifornia. Also sane people.

I wonder just how genetically different these pond turtles are from all the other pond turtles that we need to protect them, are they actually a unique and different strain? Why can’t we just breed them like we do fish and seed them into the environment. Environmentalist always come up with a new kangaroo rat to screw over man.

I’m buying gold-plated soy beans to hedge for the impending collapse. ;)
