Man Who Filmed Walter Scott’s Death Held Video; Waited to See if Police ‘Continued with the Lies’
Mediaite ^ | 04/08/2015 | Tina Nguyen

The outcry over the death of Walter Scott stems from a video, taken by an anonymous bystander,
that depicts police officer Michael Slager shooting at Scott eight times as he flees. In an interview with Time, however, Scott’s brother says that the video may not have come out if the police hadn’t initially tried to paint Slager as innocent.

Anthony Scott told Time that he found the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death, caused after a routine traffic stop, highly suspicious. “When I got there somebody told me that he was gone. And I was like what in the world? What happened? What happened? How did you get killed in a random stop? It just didn’t make any sense to me.”

Slager initially said that he shot Walter Scott out of fear for his life, claiming that he had taken his stun gun, and police performed CPR immediately on the shooting victim. The video, which Scott said he received at a wake earlier this week, showed otherwise:

“He wanted to see what reports were coming from the North Charleston Police Department because of the fact that they may have told the truth,” Scott said in an phone interview from home with TIME Wednesday. “And when they continued with the lies, he said, ‘I have to come forward.’”

…“I was angry. Shocked,” Scott said. “I said, ‘We have to have that.’ So that we could prove it was innocent.”

Scott credits the bystander and the video with getting Slager charged with murder. “I think that if that man never showed the video we would not be at the point that we’re at right now,” he said. “The video tells the truth. It would not be so hard for us to prove that this man was running away when you get shot in your back. I mean how can you defend that?”

The man who filmed the video has not yet been named.

“Wait what?

You should really clarify your statement.

Looks like you are saying black guys with concealed weapons when stopped need to shoot first.”

I’m not saying that, but if this is not dealt with swiftly and severely, it might be a reasonable course of action in that circumstance. Heck, it might even be a defense. “I was in fear of my life” works both ways - and then, we are certainly on the road to anarchy.

“I don’t get the cops strategy of moving the taser closer to the victim’s body while leaving 6 or 8 rounds of brass on the ground from where he shot?”

Guess he was not a criminal mastermind, either.

I have been wondering about the object seen tossed to the ground at the start of the video.

I am going to assume it was the taser in question. I do not know how it was tossed or if the man went for it or if he was tased with it or anything else.

What I want to know is why the officer moved it near the man’s body after the shooting.

The only thing I can come up with, and it’s very weak, is that the man was being tased, and the wire was spooled out leaving a long length of wire between the gun and the man, and the officer moved it there to not have those lengths of wires in the way of everyone about to show up.

Any thing other than that seems to me like he was manipulating the scene, and I do think that he was manipulating the scene.

So I would like to know what is in his police report and what he told his superiors. If he said I moved the taser to a location near the man’s body for X reason, and did not try to hide that the gun had been moved, then I might believe he wasn’t trying to plant evidence.

But if he made no mention at all of moving it and further said the man took it, then he’s planting evidence.

Regardless of what was done with the taser, I can still see no justification in the shooting at all as the man was moving away from the officer without a weapon and presenting a threat to no one at the time of the shooting.

Would you just stand still and let a cop tase you? I would be trying to evade it anyway I could. A lot of people will run from a taser.

“both the cop and Scott were on the ground struggling”

Thanks for that info. Here in Washington State a cop can shoot in an attempt to stop someone fleeing from a felony. If the guy had assaulted the cop (a felony) and then fled - that would be legal in Washington. Not sure about resisting arrest (say the cop saw on the computer that there was a warrant out for the guy, the cop tried to handcuff him, the guy tries to get up and flee.)

However, dropping the taser next to the guy shows the cop’s deceit, and that it probably isn’t a justified shooting. I would give him 20+ years in general population just for the deceit.

I doubt I’d be fighting with the cop. He was fighting, got tased and tried
to get away. The cop shouldn’t have shot at that point and that is the
reason he’s facing charges.

it appears odd to me that it starts when it does

At the beginning of the video, the man filming seems to be running toward the action, and he just catches up at that point.

The ONLY possible justification for this shooting is the Fleeing Felon Rule. The police have not yet shown that Mr Scott was recently in the commission of a violent felony (murder, rape, etc), nor that the murdererrrrr, I mean policeman, had any reason to believe that he was. Until they do, nothing can change the fact that this was an unjustified killing.

Because that’s when the video was turned on and started to record.

Ya think this was a staged production where camera guy was all set up before hand to watch the action?

Did you expect opening credits, a musical score, and some character development?

A guy on the street saw something unfolding, he probably watched for more than a few seconds in disbelief, then took time to think about whether he should try to film it, then took more time to pull out his phone, then took more time to find the camera button (while also trying to keep an eye on what was going on, to make sure it didn't come his way), and THEN got to start filming.

Maybe you have the clapper attached to your Google Glass, but most people aren't as advanced as you yet.

“Isn’t the great majority of police shootings, of whites?”

Seriously, I’d like to see some stats too. I wonder if black cops also shoot people.

Supposedly this policeman had a previous complaint that he used a Taser when it was unjustified. The charges did not stick, but it sounds like it wasn’t justified in the previous case.

You're not saying it...but you ARE saying it.

One more chance to clarify. Are you saying that a black guy with a concealed weapons when stopped needs to shoot first?

Yes or no.
