PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) — A single dad and his seven children were found dead in their one-story home, relatives said, and though officials gave no details on the cause of the deaths, the man's stepfather said he had been trying to keep the family warm with a generator after the power was cut because of an outstanding bill.

Lloyd Edwards told The Associated Press that his stepson, 36-year-old Rodney Todd, had bought the generator after the power was shut off to the home in Princess Anne, about 60 miles southeast of Annapolis on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He said those who died were Todd and Todd's two sons and five daughters.

The generator was less expensive than the electric bill?

Quite possibly it was. I've seen no mention of other forms of heat and in a small house with Delmarva power his bill was perhaps $600 a month. Fall behind and from what I have heard, they will not relent unless the ENTIRE back bill is paid (no partial payments accepted).

I think the reason the utility is being questioned is because he had not been seen since March 28 and per state law the power can not be shut off before March 31.

The guy was a kitchen worker at the state university, divorced with custody of all 7 children.

He was 36 and his son was old enough to earn money to buy him a generator? Anyway, What's the big deal with having to have electricity? Being without it is a nuisance, but my parents didn't even have electricity until the '30s and they lived.

His son bought him the generator.

I worked for an insurance company long ago in the claims department. I read a deposition where there was a carbon monoxide leak into the house from the outside water heater. It was installed improperly.

The family was sleeping and only one woke up from nausea and confusion, was not understanding what was going on and trying to get down the hall to throw up, falling as he went.

Someone came over early in the morning when this was going on and after knocking a lot went in and saw this. Helped this one person outside and called the ambulance. The rest of the family, mother, father, kids already had died in their beds.

CO is an odorless colorless gas. People who are sleeping or drunk can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms.

Besides Algore would have saluted them for their small carbon footprint they left.

“He was 36 and his son was old enough to earn money to buy him a generator?”

This stepson did not live there.

“Lloyd Edwards told The Associated Press that his stepson, 36-year-old Rodney Todd, had bought the generator after the power was shut off to the home in Princess Anne, about 60 miles southeast of Annapolis on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Maybe you should read the story.

True. Owlwhore wants US to live like we're in the 1890's while he flies around in his private jet.

A tragic situation for sure, but I commend the young man who took care of his step children to the best of his ability. I didn’t see anywhere in the article what may have become of mama. Did she abandon them or did she pass away?

Maybe you should read the story.

Maybe you should. The story says Rodney Todd, who was the stepson, and the stepson's brood died, yet you said "the son bought him the generator." Does not compute.

” CO is an odorless colorless gas. “

I didn’t know this. Thanks for the info.

One would think that "to the best of his ability" would include paying the power bill.

Please, FRiends, everyone take the time to replace your Smoke Alarm batteries now if not done since the time change. If your detectors are 10 years old, or of unknown age, get new ones now.

And install a CO detector if you do not have one (more is always better when it comes to detectors). CO is deadly, and comes from many sources, can even come into the house from outside devices if conditions are just right (or real wrong).

Also, children sleep very soundly and may not hear alarm beeps from detectors, so make sure there are detectors in or near adult quarters as well. (many instances of smoke alarms blaring away and not waking children).

Respectfully, no.

He had already reproduced.

You’re supposed to run the generator OUTSIDE of the house!

Once they shut it off, they usually require the whole amount in arrears and a reconnect fee.......maybe he got the generator used.

A sad story.

About that same time, I bought a new CO detector and put it in my new house the day we moved in. A few hours later it went off.

I eventually called the fire dept. to see if they had a CO sniffer. They came over and we determined pretty quickly I had a defective detector.

“That was mean.”

I didn’t begin the discussion, I responded to one of two sequential posts jokingly assigning him the Darwin award. I refuted the assertions, which WERE mean, but you judged mine to be mean instead.

Your condescension was misplaced.
