The Russians have it all over us for Easter thanks to the great Russian Orthodox musical tradition. You'll hear some of their hymns quoted here.

Rimsky-Korsakov: "Russian Easter Overture"

A few years ago when I did a complete retrospective of Rachmaninov’s music over the period of several months, I posted both the Liturgy and the Vespers.

Yes. The main subject of that overture is a recurring theme in the Russian Orthodox liturgy. The words are:

“Krisos Voskres” (Christ is Risen)

The correct response is :

“Vayeestinu Voskres” (Truly he has Risen!)

Nick gets it all into a neat little overture, but the real thing is about four hours long! LOL!

Standing. No pews. holding a drippy candle.

My interest in music is strange, I like it all.

Sometimes I into a phase where I go with one thing or another.
I often listen to WWII era music because it reminds me of my dad...
Vera Lynn, Marlena Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet...
It does not matter if I understand the language,
it is all about the “mood” that it creates.
Sometimes, looking up the lyrics is disappointing, and
does not match what you had in your mind.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on my zydeco fetish!
And I don’t speak french.

Outstanding, Maestro! Rimsky-Korsakov produced many great works, and Russian Easter Overture is one of my faves.

I had the good fortune to sing in the chorus for "Le Coq d'Or" many years ago. I was always struck by his orchestration and his ability to work within a small musical "cell" - extracting everything that could be extracted from it.

"I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life.
I am prepared to give my life in their defense."

He was the best orchestrator of his era. His first published piece was a symphony he wrote while a midshipman aboard a Russian ship. It's astonishing for an 18 year old.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Symphony #1 in E minor, Op. 1, first movement
