John Prine wrote and first recorded "Angel from Montgomery" in 1971. He says he was intrigued by the idea of "a song about a middle-aged woman who feels older than she is ... I had this really vivid picture of this woman standing over the dishwater with soap in her hands....She wanted to get out of her house and her marriage and everything. She just wanted an angel to come to take her away from all this." Prine believes he was likely drawn to Montgomery as the song's setting by virtue of being a fan of Hank Williams, who had ties to that city.

Prine's subtle masterpiece has since been coved by artists as diverse as Carly Simon, John Denver, Gretchen Wilson, Tanya Tucker, Ben Harper, the Dave Matthews Band, Steve Goodman, John Mayer and Hank Williams' granddaughter Holly Williams to name a few. It has become a signature song for both Bonnie Raitt (who charted the song in 1974) and Susan Tedeschi (Mrs. Derek Trucks). The royalties on this song alone could finance a South American country.

Listed at #264 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, Randy Newman's "Sail Away" takes the form of a "come on" or a "pitch" from an American slave trader to potential slaves. The slaver attempts to convince his listeners to climb aboard his ship and "sail away" with him to America, which he portrays as a land of happiness, plenty and liberty.

Notably covered by Ray Charles, Etta James, Harry Nilsson, Frankie Miller, Dave Van Ronk, Dave Matthews, Linda Ronstadt, Bobby Doyle, Bobby Darin, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee it's another unmistakable classic of Americana.

Number 25 in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, "God Only Knows" still stands as a giant among songs that have survived the 60s. Written by Brian Wilson with lyrics by Tony Asher, it was released in 1966 first in America as the B-Side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by The Beach Boys and followed on the group's album Pet Sounds. Music Theorist's have written volumes about the song's structure, harmonic complexity and extensive use of inverted chords. Musicologist, Dr. Philip Lambert has said the song evokes the sacred traditions of a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach or an oratorio by George Frideric Handel. Others focus on the actual production and extensive recording sessions featuring as many as 23 musicians including French horn, accordions and a quartet of violas and cellos, all under Brian Wilson's unflagging leadership. Others write extensively about the song's controversial mention of God in the title and lyrics (unthinkable and revolutionary in pop music of the era). All for a song it took Brian a mere seven minutes to compose.

The song has been as extensively covered as it has been written about and documented. Literally thousands of artists have in some way paid tribute to Wilson's magnum opus. I include only two MP3s here, the original Beach Boys release featuring Carl Wilson on lead vocal and David Bowie's inspired cover. I have included a link to the youtube video of the October 7, 2014 simulcast for BBC television 's launch of BBC Music featuring Brian Wilson himself and other major artists from different musical genres (creating a supergroup called The Impossible Orchestra). The music video, directed by François Rousselet, features the artists in lavish, fantastical computer generated settings. The track was released as a charity single for Children in Need. Accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, each of the following performers are listed in order of appearance, singing vocals unless otherwise specified:
