Sales tax shocker: Rate will hit 10% in some Bay Area cities April 1

Sales tax rates are going up in parts of California on Wednesday and will, for the first time, hit double digits in some Northern California cities.

Shoppers in Albany, Hayward and Union City and San Leandro in Alameda County and El Cerrito in Contra Costa County will pay 10 percent starting next month.

If a bill in the state Legislature passes, more areas could be paying that much.

The statewide sales tax rate is 7.5 percent. State law allows cities and counties to add up to 2 additional percentage points in local sales and use taxes. The Legislature passed bills that allowed Alameda County and the city of El Cerrito to ask voters to exceed the state-imposed limit and raise their local sales and use tax rates to 2.5 percent. Voters agreed, which will push sales tax rates into double digits in some cities, according to the California Taxpayers Association.

That’s on top of their high state income tax rate. TN has a 7.25% state sales tax and most counties add another 2% and some, like Williamson county where I live, don’t tax food purchased in stores.

But we have lower property taxes and no state income tax.

Where the rubber meets the road - somebody has to pay eventually, and even “other people’s money” is exhausted at the break point!

I live in California and I hate paying all taxes, but I take some comfort in the fact that all of the illegals and welfare bums have to pay sales tax. They sure as hell are not paying income taxes.

A tithe to to the God of Big Government which has an insatiable appetite for more taxes.

One question which a libtard will never answer for me is this: What is full funding for a school district, an anti-poverty program or any other favorite libtrad cause?

Show me any state, county or city where libtards are in charge of everything which even comes close to achieving this goal.

Why do states like Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota or Iowa which have among the lowest per pupil expenditures in the country consistently outperform those from states in libtard dominated areas of the country such as California, New York or Massachusetts which have the highest?

39.6% federal marginal tax rate
12.5% CA marginal tax rate
4.9% CA sales tax rate (on the remaining amount earned)

So what is so special again about SF that people would give up 57.00% of the last dollar they earn?

I think I have a solution for wealth disparity — An excise tax on blue states.

There already is. Any business with a physical presence in CA has to collect sales tax on sales in CA. Any other purchases online, sales tax is supposed to be reported and paid by the consumer.

Add in 10+% CA income tax, and you are basically screwed income wise if you live in CA.

Problem is, the roaches who voted for these taxes and/or the politicians who promulgated them will move to conservative states. And then do the same thing. In fact, that’s already happened.

Well said, except your numbers for sales tax are low: 7.5% state sales tax and up to 2% or 2.5% city sales tax...

Here in Texas I pay 8.25% in Sales Tax for most purchases (as do most people...a few areas are lower, but not much)...still on the high side nationally.

But here’s where it gets interesting. If you itemize your taxes in Texas, you can deduct them from federal income tax. So if you’re in the 25% rate, then your effective sales tax drops to 6.2%. And no, you don’t have to keep receipts for it, the IRS estimates what you likely paid in taxes, based on a number of taxes...and you can use their number, which tends to be reasonable, (or you can still put all your receipts together).

But it gets better. If you buy something like a car, boat, camper, etc., the starting tax rate is only 6.25%, and that is STATEWIDE (in order to keep the playing field level for all dealers). THEN you still get that 25% discount by deducting it from federal taxes - so the EFFECTIVE RATE (the rate you really pay out of pocket) for a car is only 4.7 - among the LOWEST in the country for states that charge sales tax (which is most).

On top of that, there is no state income tax, so you don’t have to commit perjury by claiming you bought NOTHING from Amazon or any other on-line retailer that doesn’t charge sales tax.

PRETTY DARN GOOD here.

South Dakota resident here: sales tax rate is 4% and no income tax.

SD has very low per pupil expenditures and my son still got a 33 on his ACT. he gives the credit to his teachers being conservative and not allowing distractions in the classroom.
