Kemper Marley was the focus of the investigation into the death of Don Bolles.
And that's sorta the defining moment for the ugly side of Arizona politics. It revealed that there was a truly vicious group embedded in the Republican Party of AZ, which generally has been far more virtuous then others - like the California Republicans, who appear to be hapless idiots mostly.
Tucson has always been unremarkable, except for guys like Waldon V. Burr. And now his Mexican analogue, Raul Grijalva, MEChA member, Chicano terrorist, dimwitted thug trying to hijack the schools and the gringo money to be a Beeg Man.
All the political power was in Maricopa county and still is. The Phoenix 40 and guys like Marley and Jim Hensley put it together, but there was always a straighter, more upright group that actually got elected. Goldwater, Williams, even the Babbits.
But there is an underground that was largely unknown until the 1970s. These guys are the Republican version.
The Rats there are a whole different ballgame. East coast and West coast mobsters exploiting a bunch of straight arrow rubes: the DeConcini's turning Southern Arizona into a Safe Haven for NY mafia types. Had the unpleasant experience as a kid of running into some of those people - they had secluded ranches on the East side of Tucson out by Tanque Verde. Everyone knew who they were but had no idea how bad they were. They generally left Arizona alone, as long as they got left alone.
But Arizona now is Republican suburbanites, retirees and Mormons. McCain markets his military gig to them, but it's a joke now and everyone gets it. Don't know how long McSally will last but as a Republican, she makes a pretty good Democrat.
She doesn't represent Southern Arizona in any real way. She's a carpetbagger like McCain. But she got elected cuz She's a She and soft hearted Republican women feel for her. As far as Ron Barber goes, he was always just a smurf...no personality, and no attraction.
Arizona is not California. There is hope there. But that hope can only be realized by getting rid of the corrosive, self serving virus known as McCain. Once he's gone, McSally is nobody.
And there's a long conga line of good guys there who COULD dump McCain. And then the Flake.
But he's so desperate to be a Big Man, and throw his weight around D.C., where he really lives, he'll do anything. When the old folks of East Mesa and Sun City finally die off, the generation that reveres military without question will no longer be there to vote for him. And that will be it.
So it's just a matter of time. But who replaces him is really important: it has to be an American Patriot, someone who is fiercely against the cynical self serving games McCain plays. He has to represent Arizona, and the decent suburban folks just trying to raise families in an American city and state.
McCain, McSally and Grijalva don't even begin to do that.
