Arizona tried it. It worked. Didn’t cost them a dime in deportation expenses and over a million left. Then SCOTUS screwed that up.

Show them that the welfare gravy train is over, declare an "amnesty" period for them to get out while the getting is good, and when that's over, start incarceration and forced deportations.
