Cruz Has Cash, but Is No Gipper (Revisionist history plus Bergdahl snark)
US News & World Report's Washington Whispers ^ | March 25, 2015 | Joseph P. Williams, news editor

Posted on 03/25/2015 4:57:13 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Social media metrics measure success for Cruz, and the decision to charge Sgt. Bergdahl is more complex than you think.

Cruzonomics: That sound you hear is dropped jaws all across the political landscape:US News’ Dave Catanese reports that Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican and Senate bomb-thrower who announced he’s running for president, smashed his own goal of raising $1 million during the first week of his presidential campaign by hitting that mark in 24 hours. He got there, though, with help from a team of data analysts who helped Cruz make it rain through carefully scripted small donors of $250 or less (he raised $70,486 from 952 donors who saw him on Fox News Tuesday night). More importantly, instant cash like that gives Cruz a little something he lacked -- viability -- as well as a seat at the table with a pile of chips in front of him. He may not believe in global warming, but his scientists changed Cruz’s climate, literally, overnight.

Exactly Alike but Completely Different: Last week, Whispers explained why Cruz might want to rethink wrapping himself in the iconic image of President Ronald Reagan, peace and blessings upon his name. Now the wonk-data web side FiveThirtyEight.com puts the empirical beat-down on Cruz’s self-conflation, and that of supporters who claim the Gipper was a longshot for the White House, too. While Cruz may have raised a metric ton of money in the first 15 minutes of his candidacy, Reagan had something the Texas senator doesn’t: the backing of his own party. Actual Republicans actually liked Reagan, while Cruz can’t seem to scrape together endorsements from Republicans in his home state, let alone anyone of influence on the national level. Moreover, Reagan was a GOP favorite, he had two terms as a popular governor of the nation’s largest state, he won the “endorsement primary” and he had an endearing “common touch.” Meanwhile, Cruz’s shenanigans have irritated plenty of people on Capitol Hill -- including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, which may not be an instant threat but could result in a few well-placed phone calls to party bigwigs.

Leave No Man Behi- Wait, What?: When President Barack Obama stood next to Bob and Jani Bergdahl, parents of an Army sergeant captured by the Taliban, to announce their son, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, a POW of the Taliban, was coming home -- and not in a flag-draped coffin -- because he’d been traded for five Taliban prisoners, conservatives howled, even though they’d tried to shame the White House for what seemed like inaction to free him. Now that the Army has announced Bergdahl has been charged with desertion, conservatives can’t get the “we told you so’s” out of their mouths quickly enough. But The Atlantic reports that the truth is a little less convenient than the storyline of trading a dishonorable combat vet for five soon-to-be terrorists, and a lot more complex. The Army, it seems, is making a pragmatic decision to charge him instead of discharge him and fork over back pay from his time in captivity. Further, it’s probably unlikely that they’ll be able to make the charges stick, let alone send Bergdahl to Fort Leavenworth.

Even when leftists are so obviously wrong they're right.

It makes no sense to argue with them. They are completely insane.

Cruz has the small $$$$ donors and many, many grassroots voters, while Jeb and company have only a few megadonors whose votes won't get him very far.

The MSM can't wrap itself around this simple fact.

I would definitely vote for Cruz and I think he is to the right of Reagan. He would be able to out debate Reagan on policy, but he does not have the charisma of Reagan. Reagan could cross the entire spectrum of voters. I wish he could be our next President but I don’t even think he will be the Republican candidate.

Winning GOP candidate will need about 65 million votes and $1 billion dollars. If half those voters donate just $30 each, big donors are neutralized.

Why don’t you think that Cruz can’t win the primaries ?
Who is a better debater ?
Who else is a REAL Conservative? ( Okay, I’ll give you Walker, but he just hired a Rommney adviser and sadly, he’s luppen ! )

If debates and policy won primaries and elections we would be in great shape.

everyone hated Reagan! The establishment wanted BUSH! Reagan placated them by putting Bush on the ticket!

The news coverage prior to the election was that electing Reagan would lead to World War 3 since he was obviously a far right wing war monger nut case!

Aside from ACORN and other such groups, which the GOP side doesn't have, the ONLY reason that DEMS win the presidency, is the mordant stupidity of those who vote for them and GOPers lose because the GOP-Eers have put up truly lousy candidates of late, which has had the effect of people NOT voting for them.

Sure jebbie is getting the idiot ELITES' money, but money doesn't produce votes!

GRASSROOTS PRODUCE VOTES FOR OUR SIDE AND YOU HAVE ALREADY GIVEN UP ON CRUZ, FOR NO VIABLE REASON !

Instead of claiming that "CRUZ JUST CAN'T WIN! ", why not try to get out there and convince others that his policies are good for this nation and THEM, so they should get out there and convince others and get everyone to go vote for him in the primaries ?

GIVING IN, ESPECIALLY NOW, IS BEYOND LAME!

And you never answered my original question.

think back to 2012, man FReepers would claim Newt won quite few of the debates hands-down, but that didn’t gain him the nomination.
