Mayor takes stand against Muslim Shariah courts

When a group of imams tried to bring a form of “Shariah light” to Texas, they met an unlikely foe – Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne.

Now, Van Duyne has been thrust into the national media spotlight, and her city is being called “ground zero” in the battle to prevent Islamic law from gaining a foothold, no matter how small, in the U.S. legal system.

Van Duyne’s name and picture has popped up on Facebook pages and Twitter feeds across America in recent days, casting her with equal enthusiasm as villain or hero, depending on one’s political outlook.

She’s either the mayor who stood up to the Muslim Brotherhood or the “Islamophobic bigot” looking to cash in politically on fears about Islamic terrorism.

Good for you Mayor. Religion aside, you come here to live, you play by our rules. Sadly, our rules are being tossed out the window in some places. You want sharia, go back where it's the accepted practice. You want to participate in this society, you change your attitude. I think some place in the UK have already knuckled under to the demands of the imams. Idiots.

Islam is incompatible with civilized society.

Sharia is permissible, but a couple of nuts with a fake subpoena is worth an all out raid.

Mayor Van Duyne is yet another stalwart woman after my heart. Stand tough Mayor, you are a true American.

And know we stand with you.

The Dallas Morning News attacked Van Duyne’s supporters as followers of “fringe websites.”

The Dallas Morning News (DMN) was once a great paper..but now it is nothing but a liberal joke..a bad one at that..Not to get off topic, but in 2012 Glenn Beck appeared at Cowboys Stadium and over 65,000 people attended. The DMN did not print one word about it in their paper..imagine any event, (sports, liberal political, etc) that had that many people and not get a mention in the DMN. I'm not a big Beck fan, but that really highlighted the obvious liberal bias the paper is now infested with...

Muslims should be treated just as well as Christians are treated in Muslim countries.

Agreed. How any feminist, gay, or lesbian could support Islam is just plain nuts, crazy, or stupid.

“Muslims should be treated just as well as Christians are treated in Muslim countries.”

They should be persona non grata here. And if we were smart ( which we are not any longer) we should start deporting the one’s that are here. If we don’t, it will not end well for either us or them.

The mayor can't do anything to these Muslims and their mosque. They have broken no laws. I have read about this for a while. They counsel with their members just like the Catholics/Methodist/Baptist, etc. do. Nothing they do is legal in an American court just as nothing that comes out of a protestant church is legal in an American court.

As an example, they may counsel with a husband and wife who are getting a divorce, may suggest in the division of property, but the divorce itself must go to an American court for the divorce to happen.

If a member or members of this group break an American law, only then may they be hauled into an American court and charged with a crime.

I'd rather their mosque wasn't in this area, not that far from me, but they are here legally and could build that mosque legally and can do what they want on their property with their members, except they cannot commit a crime, just as other churches and their members cannot commit a crime.

Some people have a bias against Catholics, but in this country we have freedom of religion. Catholics can do what they want on their property with their members as long as no American laws are broken. Just because some people think Catholics are wrong in their beliefs and activities, Catholics have the protection of our constitution regarding religious freedom. So do the Muslims as long as they break no federal or Texas law.

I am a Catholic.

Roger that. Just want to assurance that there is no way that the “validity” of their rules and regs trying to be put in place is the issue. Off the books, counseling etc is all well and good but there is always the possibility of the incrementally placing sharia compliant laws on the books. Pretty sure they aren’t happy with Judeo-Christian based laws on which this country was pieced together. Despite the lyin’ king’s input that Islam helped create this country.

“...there is always the possibility of the incrementally placing sharia compliant laws on the books.”

Hell would freeze over before Texas recognized sharia law.
