The Asians get there through hard work. How dare anyone try to take this away from them—all those years of study and focus and discipline.
Lots of people with their pants in a wad because their kids didn’t get in. This always happens.
I once posted something about how great the prep courses are and how it is a superb investment and a path out of poverty. Now I’m sorry I did. Instead of prompting parents to save up the money and use it for their kids’ future, it has prompted meddling government types to try to eliminate the advantage of the prep course by changing the admissions standards.
Subsidize the good students whose parents would have trouble paying for the course, if you want to. That’s one solution. But don’t change the prep course or the test or the criteria.
Basically, what they do in asia is spend 12 hours a day memorizing the answers to government tests and standardized tests. Americans better think long and hard before saying that this is a model system of education worth emulating.
Stuy is the only specialized HS where Asians are the majority. My child attended what is the #2 Specialized HS, it was a mix of White, Whit Russian, Indian, Asian, Hispanic, and Black.
The problem with the Specialized test is that it is color blind. Once a student gets past the test, if they are not capable of learning and keeping up, they will soon wash out unless they dumb down the schools. I think I know what the mayors second move will be if he is successful.
