I do not see this as emotional non-thinking. This seems like the sensible thing to do to me, especially if no one wants to buy that house. Why let it sit there and become dilapidated?
Why not let the schoolrooms where the students were murdered just sit there and ALSO become dilapidated? Because they already were dilapidated FOR YEARS! Think about it.
