"Did she think she could just walk among these savages as if she had some kind of immunity from what was going on around her?" The obvious answer is yes. She didn't go over there to lose her life or be sexually violated, I am pretty sure that the way things turned out were quite an unpleasant surprise to her. Nobody ever leaves their house in the morning thinking they will be killed in an auto accident on their way to work.
