Sun setting on daylight saving time? States consider alternative to clock-changing ‘hassle’

States across the country are taking a dim view toward daylight saving time. And some say it's time to turn back the clock -- so to speak.

Lawmakers in 10 states have proposed legislation challenging what, for many, is a twice-a-year headache, and one they just endured again earlier this month. The new bills would mostly have states pick a time ... and stay on that time.

"Every time you have the spring forward or fall back, you get in the coffee shops, churches and everybody's complaining about it and all of a sudden it dawned on me it is kind of a hassle," said Texas state Rep. Dan Flynn, who proposed a bill that would place the entire state of Texas on central standard time year-round.

Beginning in 1966, every state in the country except Arizona and Hawaii started adjusting their clocks under the Uniform Act that permanently established daylight saving time nationwide.

States move their clock back one hour in the fall and one hour ahead in the spring in an effort to "save daylight" with later sunrises and sunsets.

What an utter load of nonsense!

Every kid north of the California/Oregon border spends a fair amount of the winter months travelling to school in the dark.

Where I spent my early school years, it was dark by 4 pm during the winter. In Alaska the kids are travelling both ways in poor light.

Then again, these are Florida kids we’re talking about...

What an utter load of nonsense!

Just relating the facts about what actually took place.

Check commenter 134 - you couldn’t even custom design a time zone for that issue. :-)

The US is on Daylight Savings Time for 2/3 of the year already, but if it were made standard year round, there are places that would see nightfall at 3 or 3:30 PM during December and January....

You have it backwards. DST always adds another hour of light in the evening and subtracts one in the morning. The problem with year-round DST is darkness in the mornings, particularly darkness before school starts for children. Whenever it is tried, every kid hit by a car on the way to school is blamed on winter DST. There is a strong possibility that they are right.

Maybe in your house..
I’ve got non digital watches, electrical timers for lights & watering that all need to be manually....twice a year.
Let’s dump daylight savings!

By the time work ends it’s PITCH BLACK outside.

Ask your boss if you can start work an hour earlier and quit an hour earlier.

I’ve lived under both systems, and it’s far better keeping DST. By the time work ends it’s PITCH BLACK outside. No thanks.

Agree, but kids going to school in the dark Northeast is a valid argument against it.

Yes, my mistake. I realized I had it reversed almost instantly after posting. But no edits possible on Free Republic, so my mistake stands for all to see.

As you wish. For me, I am quite content with the system as is. But, heck, this is an issue where I will happily abide by whatever rules my STATE adopts.

This issue, and whether it is usually best to reverse park, and above all, how the Charmin should go into the holder, are the issues that are sure to get lots of posts and strong opinions in America!

It always amuses me to see how many people willingly accept the idea that “Government” has the power to change time. Six o’clock is not seven o’clock or five o’clock regardless of what government decrees. You can reset your clock all you want but there is still only 24 hours in a day.
