Sun setting on daylight saving time? States consider alternative to clock-changing ‘hassle’
Fox News ^ | 3-21-15 | Matt Finn

States across the country are taking a dim view toward daylight saving time. And some say it's time to turn back the clock -- so to speak.

Lawmakers in 10 states have proposed legislation challenging what, for many, is a twice-a-year headache, and one they just endured again earlier this month. The new bills would mostly have states pick a time ... and stay on that time.

"Every time you have the spring forward or fall back, you get in the coffee shops, churches and everybody's complaining about it and all of a sudden it dawned on me it is kind of a hassle," said Texas state Rep. Dan Flynn, who proposed a bill that would place the entire state of Texas on central standard time year-round.

Beginning in 1966, every state in the country except Arizona and Hawaii started adjusting their clocks under the Uniform Act that permanently established daylight saving time nationwide.

States move their clock back one hour in the fall and one hour ahead in the spring in an effort to "save daylight" with later sunrises and sunsets.

You never lose that hour of sunlight. You can use any time.

I used to work for a company that used our extra hour of daylight betweem 2am and 3am for meal break. I used to play softball for an hour. No, really. We really did.

“Unless one is a statist that loves the government constant meddling”

You can always refuse the government mandate to adjust your clocks for DST.

But, look out for that Leap Second.

You miss that and the Feds will toss you in the Super Max Prison for life.

Going back and forth twice a year is not good for one’s sanity or health

Oh brother. Only those that can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I ignore many levels of government all the time. I have no problem with that.

The problem with the change is that it is a hassle that government doesn't need to burden the populace with twice a year.

May not be a problem for you, but you aren't everyone, and when you act like you are, that is obnoxious.

There is no reason for many states not to have a single time, all year, and still have daylight in the evenings.

Those that act like they have the solution for everyone just come off as obnoxious.

LOL! I was thinking about pieces of string and low-info voters, but the idea is the same. I'm glad you found a good poster for it.

How is it a hassle? Almost every clock automatically adjusts itself.

Many people's bodies don't adjust readily, particularly the nightowl types who are already social pariahs because their biorhythms don't wake up early, even if they get up and go to work. They tend to hit their stride in the afternoon when others are waning and watching the clock to go home. It's very stressful, especially on families with children, to start hauling them out of bed earlier, even if you have tried to ease them up to it the week before. And for older people, it takes longer every year for the body to adjust.

Secondly, with people traveling and living at great distances, it is difficult to remember when to call overseas clients or family, or to have them call you, when there is a patchwork of DST and GMT, etc.

Thirdly, government has moved the "spring forward" date earlier than in past years, so even people whose minds unconsciously prepare for repeated annual events are getting hammered by that.

Or let the Starbuckers stand around and talk about
race relations instead of time changes.

True, that. Summer farm work always figured in. But let’s face it, farmers always have run on their own time as demanded by the chores. Milking time is milking time, whatever the clock says.

Well I certainly hope so! DST is the stupidest, most useless and most bothersome idea to ever come along, yet for some idiotic reason it is non-controversial and seems to enjoy bipartisan support.

The clocks on the phones, computers, iPads, cars, and GPS all adjust. The few I adjust by hand takes 1 minute in total to adjust.

We had to do the wireless conventional phone, the microwave, coffeemaker, stovetop, clock radios in several rooms, several wristwatches, two antique clocks, car clocks, and the "smart" electric meter. Took a long time and was a gigantic pain in the butt.

...they have the solution for everyone just come off as obnoxious.

Following your logic, we ought to scrap time zones and time standardization entirely and just let every freak flag fly. The fact is that the system we have is practical, creates efficiency, makes life easier for durned near everyone, all with hassle approaching zero. But hey, you go right ahead and set that watch just as your spirit dictates! It’ll be fun!

They are not a big deal to me. But they do create more traffic accidents, illnesses and troubles in schools for a couple of weeks that affect many people.

Nope. You are following false logic. Time zones need to be set ONCE and left alone.

They don't need to be jacked with twice a year.

Time zones are an important part of life, not just modern life, and the recent jacking with time twice a year is a relatively recent and progressive idea.

It ain't about the time zones, it's about the twice a year nanny government meddling does.

Here, here. It is crazy in the summer to have daylight at 9:00pm on the far western edge of the central time zone. Even twilight at 9:30!!!!

Standard time all the way.
