Delphi's Chief Technology Officer Jeff Owens said the car has been successfully tested on streets in California and Las Vegas, but the cross-country trip will be the car's "ultimate test."

IF this works, I can see it being useful for blind people, but I have serious doubts
My money's still on Frankenstein. There are things human drivers just do better.
I love that movie ......and car.
Pedal-powered Raht Racer cycle can travel as fast as a car

Check out the BMW i8 for me, will you?
How will it fill itself up with fuel? And if it has a backup driver, what’s the use of the car driving itself?
That would make a great bait car.
obvious question is how will this car travel across country on one tank of gas? How will it get gas in many states that don’t have an attendant to pump gas, and even ones that do, how will the driverless car PAY for the gas?
I presume that, while there will be no one in the driver’s seat, there will be passengers.
"Melange still races" (Speed Racer reference)
Exactly. I have no desire to meet one of these on the highway not knowing when the steering will lock and cause it to swerve head-on into me. Driving a car is a pleasurable experience....why would anyone want a car that drives itself?
Stop Tom...stop....you’re scaring people...stop Tom....stop
Drivers likely won't have a clue what is going on unless they are paying attention and their minds are ahead of the vehicle. If they are reading a book or texting it is doubtful they could determine the problem and regain control in a few seconds.
So the driverless car pulls into your truck exit and a synthesized voice asks, “Is this Home Depot?”...
common sense or logic is not the main consideration. The most immediate benefit of automation of transportation is that costs can be cut. Workplace regulations in the U.S. and instability in foreign nations are some of the causes of workplace automation. This is happening in every possible occupation that has an element of routine involved. Many jobs will be automated worldwide. The autonomous vehicle will be used by the Government and military applications. Business to Business applications are another possibility for autonomous vehicles. The military and maybe business owners are drooling over the possibilities of the autonomous vehicles.
Kill it.
Kill it with fire.
Frankly I hope it crashes (with no injuries to others). This is the ridiculousness of the left. If I think it then it must be done. All of the silly notions that cars MUST be driverless to ‘improve’ traffic flow and fuel efficiency are just that. As with all software there will come a time when it doesn’t work(because software always fails at some point) and in that moment a driverless car is nothing more than a weapon on the road
‘________send them to grandma.’
Oh nooooh - LOL!!!
We have 11 - - -
You just don't get it.
Since the early mainframes, the incompetent have been able to hide behind "the computer messed up". They're just seeking to absolve themselves of another level of responsibility. Now they can blame the wreck on the other driver or the computer, in that order.
Exactly what I was thinking and wondering about.
So we’d have to pay strict attention after all, after promising we could be doing other things in a driver-less car. . .
At some point, guess this will all be sorted out - this is the beginning (for the general public) of learning about this technology, so we’re in an uproar of many sorts.
