I worked in the ER of a large, very well known, hospital for 20+ years. Our hospital had a long term contract to provide care for the adult patients of several nearby state psychiatric hospitals. As a result we saw many patients of these hospitals in our ER,a good number of whom had Downs Syndrome.I found these patients to be almost universally gentle and cooperative in spite of being ill at the time (otherwise they wouldn't be n an ER).Although it's easy to see how caring for such a person would be a full time job it's also easy for me to imagine that their families would love them dearly and not see them as any kind of “burden”.

One of my grandchildren has lived with trisomy 21 for 26-years.

Always a joy to be around. Pretty good basketball and hockey player. Loves to go out in my bass boat fishing.

Loves playing the slot machines in an Indian casino we pass every summer as Grandma & I take him back to western Michigan after his summer vacation with his dad, aunt, uncles, a bunch of cousins, and his nephews and nieces here in MD.

My son is very high functioning ASD. His two best friends are boys with Downs Syndrome. They are a sweet group!
