Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, wants his employees to talk to the customers about race relations in America, which makes as much sense, I suppose, as a bank instructing its tellers to inquire after your faith. In other words, Schultz and his people have gotten so full of themselves that they actually believe a barista can engage a customer in a meaningful conversation about race, even though the customer might want only a latte and not chatter. Or else they believe that coffee, by virtue of its stimulants, is an elixir that can close the great divide, if there even is one. The program seems to have blown up on Schultz's corporation. People have taken to social media to point out that the program, called "Race Together," is merely opportunistic and inappropriate for a coffee chain. I kept waiting to read or to hear of the real reason this is so ludicrous. In fact, never has the left, as it might be represented by Schultz in this case, looked so transparently hypocritical. Where are the Starbucks in the neighborhoods populated by the people that Schultz pretends to be concerned about to the point of kick-starting yet another national conversation?

Will Starbucks open a store in Ferguson where other stores were burnt down?
Barista: Pretentious sounding word used by dejected art history and drama majors that describes their employment in order to make themselves feel better about serving coffee.

How many customers are black?
The fact that it almost sounds like Barrister probably helps in its appeal. Like calling oneself an automotive technician instead of car mechanic.
The left, which created America’s current fragmentation, is now terribly frightened of what they have created. A terrible backlash MAY be coming. The head of Starbuck’s is a leftist and probably shares the pervasive fear. As usual his leftist infatuation with “dialogue,” “debate,” “discussion,” and “the expression of different points of view,” is totally inappropriate as to location and purpose. I wish American’s had the unity and strength to totally boycott this corporation’s product. We don’t.
Great questions!
The “mayor” truly is the purveyor of common sense.
It sounds like Starbucks strives to avoid getting black customers, looking at it from their standards.
How Long did White Europeans hold Africans in Slavery??
How Long did Africans hold Whites in Slavery??
How Long did Africans hold Africans in Slavery??
What group of people today still holds Africans as Slaves??
How Long Have they been holding Africans as Slaves??
Discussion over!
How about blacks paying half of what whites pay,Howie!
Thanks for posting this. I used to live in the Twin Cities and loved reading (and listening to) Joe.
Is that wage more or less than the average wage paid to the average person-of-color in the US? (To save you all the trouble of looking this up -- Starbucks pays less.)
I don’t understand what they expect to happen.
Are you supposed to discuss race relations with the barista, and hold up the line?
Are you supposed to discuss race with the people behind you in line?
But then, assuming that they are training their employees to render the liberal view of Ferguson and race issues, doesn’t it stand to reason that there will be debate and disagreements if someone more conservative comes along?? All of of which will hold up the line and cause their customer service to suffer???
Even a dumb liberal (redundant) like Schultz has enough brain cells to know that wouldn't be a good idea!
C'mon, now, be honest --- both of those occurred during the same visit. You only had to ask for directions to a hospital after drinking their coffee ...
