WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Friday unveiled the nation’s first major federal regulations on hydraulic fracturing, the controversial technique for oil and gas drilling that has led to a dramatic increase in American energy production but has also raised concerns about health and safety risks.
The Interior Department began drafting the rules in Mr. Obama’s first term after breakthroughs in the technology, also known as fracking, led to a surge in the production of oil and gas.
The fracking boom has put the United States on track to soon become the world’s largest oil and gas producer. But environmentalists fear that the technique, which involves injecting a cocktail of chemicals deep underground to fracture the rocks around oil and gas deposits, could contaminate surrounding water supplies and wildlife.
The new rules will apply only to oil and gas wells drilled on public lands, even though the vast majority of fracking in the United States is done on private land. The rules will cover about 100,000 wells, according to the Interior Department.

I live in Marcellus shale country. The fracking boom has been a blessing to this old rustbelt area. Thousands of jobs, low unemployment, new construction, you name it. Leave it to Obama to try screw all that up. FUBO.
I’m surprised they didn’t go the Andy Cuomo route: commission a “study” by a group with a known anti-fracking bias to study fracking, then ban it based on the “study.”

Great! The family owns several sections of leases in Texas. No fracking on public land makes the drilling prospects better for us. The only wildlife we have are coyotes and jack rabbits, and nothing can hurt them.

The only problem with fracking is disposal of frac fluid. On rare occasions it has been disposed of improperly. The EPA will bust their ass for this as they should. It is very rare.
The Anti Frackers keep talking about the “toxic chemical mixtures” in the frac fluid. The fluid is basically Hydrochloric Acid, water, surfactants, KCL salts, and sand. The Hydrochloric acid reacts with the limestone and makes CO2, H2O and CaCl salt. Those evil surfactants also have another name. You pour them in your washer, they are called detergent soap.
After the frac job we will produce the frac fluid out which is basically water with CaCl and KCl salts and detergent. This will be either disposed of in injection wells, or reused on the next frac job.
No more fracking for you. Fracking Nazis. :-)
