The Toxicity of Immigration Rhetoric
RedState ^ | June 11th, 2014 | Leon H. Wolf

This is not a post about being right.

Politics is not just about being right and it never has been. The way things work in a representative democracy is that you not only have to BE right, you have to convince a critical mass of other people in this country that you are right, otherwise being right will do you no good. Is it right to shut down the federal Department of Education? Probably.

(SNIP)

Personally, I’m glad Eric Cantor lost. Personally, although I’m broadly in favor of immigration reform (depending on the particulars), I think it would be suicide to take the matter up at the present time. That doesn’t change the fact that a lot of what I’m seeing right now from people who feel more or less the same way (albeit with considerably more gusto) is counterproductive and harmful to the movement as a whole, even if it is effective at winning a low-turnout Congressional primary against an incumbent who alienated his constituency.

(SNIP)

A poor example of that would be this piece by my colleague Daniel Horowitz which addresses at least arguably a real issue, but cloaked in so much rhetoric that rises immediately to the level of 11 that it gives the very clear impression that Central American kids who cross the border without their parents should be left to starve. Calling supporters of immigration reform by Spanish names as an insult as some did a la “Jorge Arbusto” or “Juan McCain” is – let’s say less than helpful insensitivity at best and a “tell” of pretty strong racial biases at worst.

You know what is toxic? People that want to dilute the vote of American citizens and steal our birthright, to further the goals of the Marxists. That’s toxic.

If you don’t like the laws of this nation, change them.

Until them enforce the laws of our nation.

It’s always smoke and mirrors with this group.

If it’s the law, it’s an unfair law.

If illegals are in violation of our laws, it’s unfair to them.

If we demand they be deported, it’s just that we’re evil.

Do we have a right to control our borders or not? Is that some sort of evil racist plot, controlling our own borders?

They seek to game this situion based on feelings.

No!

It is rational to have border policies. It is rational to enforce them.

It is irrational to say this is about race, it’s unfair, or anything else. We have a right to make laws and enforce them. It’s our duty, if we want a nation.

The way things work in a representative democracy

Why bother reading if they don’t know we live in a representative Republic.

“I think the Tom Tancredo days within the party are over,” says conservative radio host Erick Erickson, who also runs the blog RedState, “if only because of the shell-shock results of 2012 that the base has had to suffer through.”

Erickson says this time around many groups that were previously against an immigration overhaul have changed their minds — such as “some of the local Chambers of Commerce that have been suspicious in the past, some of the Tea Party groups.”

Enforce the laws on the books regarding illegal immigration, PERIOD.

IF, as an elected official, you will not do that, then you have no business in being an elected official, PERIOD.

And spare me all of the excuses of how allowing illegals to overrun the US is such a benefit to society.

If you employ illegals, advocate the employment of illegals, or lobby the government to ignore immigration law, then you should be DEPORTED to the country where you bought your illegals from, and barred from ever setting foot on US soil ever again.

While it may be part of what was snipped, I get so annoyed by how so many supporters of amnesty refuse to face what the rhetoric was that destroyed the debate. I blame George Bush for making the entire debate more toxic with one line “Jobs Americans won’t do.”

So much of the political class seems to avoid the fact that they are not trusted on this subject and will be opposed until they convince a majority of the American people that immigration reform is being done for them not to them.
