Obama calls for mandatory voting in U.S.

President Obama, whose party was trounced in last year’s midterm election due to poor turnout among Democrats, endorsed the idea of mandatory voting Wednesday.

“It would be transformative if everybody voted,” Mr. Obama said during a town-hall event in Cleveland. “That would counteract [campaign] money more than anything. If everybody voted, then it would completely change the political map in this country.”

Mr. Obama raised the subject during a discussion of curbing the influence of campaign donations in U.S. elections. The president said he had never discussed the idea publicly before, but said Australia and some other countries have compulsory voting.

It’s my understanding that most if not all totalitarian states insist on nearly a 100% turnout and the Dear Leader win with at least 99% of the vote.

It eliminates those troublesome counting delays.

If it’s a hardship to force them to get identification, how is it not a hardship to force them to the polls?

Identification?! That's white european racist! Things will be done the turd world way - vote early, vote often, as long as you vote the right way!

Oh, and there will be "Just Us Department" approved poll watchers posted - the right kind, of course!

The recent report about the many social security numbers of people born over a hundred and ten years ago being used fraudulently probably attracted the attention of the Chicago thug.

Well, we have perfected it. There are still two candidates. And every single election is 51% to 49% —or close to it.

Yes transformative indeed.
Getting more uninformed; ignorant; government dependent to vote would be just fantastic.
Voting in a system set to function with informed, freedom loving people.
That would finish our grand experiment off quickly.
Which is what liberals want.
Many of them don't understand that tyranny will replace what we have..

Forgive me if this has been mentioned already but wouldn’t one interesting side effect of this be voter ID?

Obama calls for mandatory voting in U.S....sounds good to me - had we had such a rule, four million conservatives who stayed home in 2012 would have voted and Obama probably wouldn't have been re-elected.....

Transformative mandatory voting; one candidate. If you like your president, you can keep your president.

Those who think high voter turnout indicates civic health should note that in three German elections, 1932-33, turnout averaged more than 86 percent, reflecting the terrible stakes: The elections decided which mobs would rule the streets and who would inhabit concentration camps.
