Herzog was also far more popular than Netanyahu in the war-torn kibbutzim along the Gaza border, receiving 53% of the vote in the region, as compared to 6% for Likud.

Now that is really telling, and grim news. One would think the remnant living under such a rain of weapons would know better than to cave. A negotiated settlement will buy them worse.

Depends on the size of the Arab vote in those regions, and the size of the other conservative parties vote. The Arabs would have gone for Herzog. The very conservative parties for someone even more conservative than Netanyahu.

Never underestimate the inclination of a leftist Jew to vote for his or her own demise. This happens every election in the U.S.
