Sixteen months after leaving the New Mexico State Police amid controversy surrounding an officer-involved shooting in which he fired at the tires of a fleeing minivan carrying a woman and her five children, Elias Montoya is wearing a badge again.
Montoya is among the Taos County Sheriffs newest deputies. Chosen from among 17 candidates who applied for two open positions, he is expected to be back on patrol by months end.
While describing Sheriff Jerry Hogrefes decision to hire him as a gutsy move, Montoya was unreserved Monday in discussing the incident Oct. 28, 2013 that ended his career as a state police patrolman and brought unlikely national attention to Taos.
Footage of the shooting captured by a colleagues dashboard-mounted video camera has been broadcast on national television and viewed millions of times online.

McCloud would have just lassoed that woman.

Montoya does have support in community. And as the Sheriff says, he has Montoya’s back.

That was definitely one of the strangest police chases I’ve ever seen. However, Montoya arrived on the scene without knowing the exact situation and probably should not have fired on that van full of kids. The officer that first pulled her over seemed kind of inexperienced. He tried to treat her with kid gloves and not escalate the situation and she took advantage of it. He gave her multiple chances to avoid getting in more serious trouble. I imagine that dashcam footage will become part of the ‘what not to do’ training library.
Jerry did the right thing. The State Trooper was following his training.
He was fired because the Felon was one of Holder's people.
And so the cops knew her name, address, and license number, but still felt compelled to engage in a high speed chase through heavy traffic while firing at her car. Idiots.
As far as I know the only shots that were fired were at the scene of the stop after she resisted arrest , her son assaulted the officer and then she took off at a high rate of speed.
I was thinking about this whole Bad Cop/Good Cop/White Cop/Dead Black Thug conundrum, today.
How about we fire ALL white cops in America, and fill the ranks with only black cops?
And then we’ll just sit back and watch what happens...
