Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared victory after the first exit polls released following Tuesday's elections showed the Likud ahead of, or tied with, the Zionist Union.
Netanyahu wrote on his Facebook page: "Against all odds, a great victory for the Likud, for the nationalist camp led by the Likud, and for the people of Israel."
The numbers for Netanyahu's Likud were better than expected after pre-election polls had showed him trailing Isaac Herzog's Zionist Union by as much as five mandates.
The Zionist Union rejected conjecture that the results of the exit polls show that Netanyahu will form the next coalition.
"The Likud continues to err. The right-wing bloc has gotten smaller. Everything is open until the final results are in and we will know which parties passed the electoral threshold and what kind of government we can form. All of the spin and the commentary is too early. We have formed a negotiating team with the goal of putting together a coalition led by Herzog."

When I heard the great news I cried..I was and am so happy BiBi won..I thanked GOD..
Now it is time for us to get some relief from the criminal and his free loading family..God please take them away to jail where they belong..
Well, as far as Obama “going” ... I think we’re stuck with him until the next president is installed. But with the makeup of the present Congress, a lot of his actions will be blocked!
I think he just congratulated the Israeli people, instead ... LOL ... no joke, he really did that!
Hahahahahahaha, the forehead!
I also learned that Israeli citizens don’t vote directly for their leaders? So, do they vote for a political party/group?
Yes, in that inner envelope is just one vote, the vote for just one party of their choice. That’s it!
That’s why Netanyahu was VERY EMPHATIC to the “Nationalists” (who have several other parties they can vote for, too) to vote for ONLY THE LIKUD (thereby taking votes away from the other “right groups”) ... OR ELSE ... if LIKUD didn’t get enough votes, Israel would get the Zionist Union.
Netanyahu was able to PULL from the other right groups and gets votes for Likud, and thus, LIKUD WON, meaning that “Netanyahu won” because Netanyahu is head of the Likud Party.
That means (Likud being the winner) that the President of Israel will then give the duty of forming the new government to that winning party “head” (which happens to be Netanyahu). The President of Israel will do that on this coming Sunday! [Sunday is the beginning workday of the week in Israel ... :-) ... like our Monday]
Keep in mind that Netanyahu’s “landslide” win amounts to about 25% of voters, and that most of Netanyahu’s primary opponents are in the government with him and have their own influence. Very, very different from the USA.
