Israelis Flock to New York’s JFK’s Airport for Flights Home to Vote

New York’s John F. Kennedy airport was bustling with Israelis this morning who were seeking to catch flights home. For many, their goal was to make it back in time to vote in the general elections being held today, Israel’s NRG reported on Tuesday.

While for some their flight home today is just a coincidence, today’s elections are the main topic of discussion among the travelers in the terminal. Some of the travelers even joked that a debate could be held in the airport, with representatives from all parties, according to the report.

One couple, David and Betty Gordon, told the website they are yet undecided about who to vote for but that they like certain right-wing parties. “We made aliyah to Israel eight and a half years ago, and we live in Maaleh Adumim. To date, we’ve voted three times,” they said while laughing. “Three elections in eight years, it’s a little weird, no?” They said, “We’re debating whether to vote for Bayit Yehudi, but we’re not fully sure of the decision. Baruch Marzel represents us, but not his party. They only added him to gain votes.”

Now ... how many Americans would spend a few hundred or a thousand dollars or more to vote?! ... :-) ...

It’s a good sign for Israel and America that we allow dual citizens to vote in both countries.

Israel

Israel does not have an absentee ballot system for all citizens. Absentee ballots are restricted to soldiers, prisoners, sailors, overseas diplomats, disabled persons and hospitalized people. The votes are not cast directly but placed in a double envelope with identifying information and counted directly by the elections committee only after verifying that the voter has not voted at his official polling station. Most absentee ballots are cast the day of the elections in alternate polling stations. Early voting is limited to civil servants overseas. There is no postal voting.

Considering how Jews vote in the U.S., mostly for Leftists as I understand it, it may not be all that good a thing.

If someone knows better, I’d love to see evidence of it.

I’m not here to misrepresent the Jewish vote in the U. S.

If wrong, I want to be called on it with proof.

If they are so keen on Israel why don’t they live there?

I’ve never understood the dual-citizenship thing.

Lots of Americans spend hundreds or thousands on campaign contributions, so that their candidate may or may not get votes... what's a little skin in the game for a family's-worth of sure-votes for your candidate? (assuming, of course, crazy for a any couple or family to fly back to split their vote).

I thought usually one can vote at your country’s embassy or consulate.

Yep, they have to have ID and they have to be at the exact place that they are to.d to be. If they don’t get it all right, their vote doesn’t count!

Well, that’s a good idea, actually. If someone gets locked up for a few days, or even when awaiting trial, they should be able to vote!

That’s the scuttlebutt. If true, it’s beats me. You’d think self-preservation would rule the day.
