Putin has always had to walk a tightrope in appeasing the various political factions in Russia, he is probably right in the center of those factions. There are very extreme hardliners in Russia and they tolerated Putin as long as he threw them enough bones. Perhaps those bones have run out.
And those who are praying for Putin's demise think some kinder gentler ruler is going to take his place.
