As the war ended in Germany and US troops entered my mother’s hometown of Bachnang, the war weary citizens were treated with kindness and compassion by the GIs. My mother eventually married a soldier and immigrated to the US. She never spoke of the pillaging you described. Her family refused to display the Swastika in their shop window. They also helped their Jewish neighbors as much as they were able to.
I did not know anyone there. My family members fought in the south Pacific.
I simply read this statement in a few books. Capt. Winters (Band Of Brothers) specifically said something like this. I do know it was no contest between surrendering to the Soviets or surrendering to the US, everyone wanted to surrender to the US.
The Russians were the rampant pillagers in Germany.
