The Texas General Land Office is terminating its contract with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to run the Alamo, ending a role the DRT has held for 110 years in managing the state-owned site, the Express-News has learned.
In a joint statement with the DRT, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush said the change will help create a bigger, brighter future for this Texas shrine. The contract, which runs through Aug. 31, 2016, will be terminated after 120 days, on July 10.
The Alamo has always had the same owner the people of Texas. And so to meet the ever-increasing operational needs of the Alamo, the GLO has determined to change its day to day management from the DRT and move in a new direction, Bush said.
The Land Office plans to conduct a nationwide search for a company to manage the site. DRT President General Ellen McCaffrey said in the joint statement that the womens heritage organization is entering a new chapter and will continue to greatly honor and respect the preservation of the Alamo for future generations.
He didn’t mention this in his campaign. After he’s in office, he goes Bush. Bush I, no new taxes,,,,new taxes. Bush II “conservative”,, DHS, TSA, Prescription plan laying groundwork for Obamacare, and now this new little Bush whelp.
This is a warning beacon about Jeb. What he says doesn’t matter. He’s a Bush and will stab you in the back.
Are the Daughters getting up in years, or having declining membership? Maybe they are less interested in taking complete responsibility.
Diversity....
Diversity....
Disney.
Exactly. Profound and heroic history isn’t enough for the sissy set.
They have to have infotainment.
no, in my opinion, the old, old ladies are just no longer up to the task.
the volunteers that have held the positions for decades lack young blood to continue.
Change is required to keep the Alamo open to the public
Oh and yes.... If you have read your W.E.B. Griffin Presidential Agent series, you know that Carlos Castillo’s abuela is one of the principle Daughters looking after the Alamo. She would now be in her 80’s.
Their San Antonio heritage predates the battle of the Alamo

They don’t look like they are out of touch:
They appear to be a very organized group to me.
Actually, diversity is NOT an ISSUE.
There were both Tejanos and Anglos at the Alamo and at San Jacinto. It has always been so.
AND the intermarriage between the two races is so common as to defy actual division. EXCEPT for those die hard racists like La Raza.
Gov. Greg Abbott’s wife is hispanic and from all reports, a very fine lady.
I am sure there are Tejano families among the members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. (I qualify for the Sons of the Republic of Texas, have not filled out the paperwork but all the background is proven)
Good post.
That makes sense, just based on the geographic proximity.
This punk son of Jeb is as bad as daddy. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
And to the poster who said “The Bushes were never real Texas” YOU ARE CORRECT!
The Bolsheviks claimed that what they were doing was in the name of "the people."
“Anybody aware if the current operators are not up to the job...?”
I’ve visited it several times over the years, the last time being a couple of years ago. I haven’t observed any significant improvements or enhancements during my visits. While the DTR should be revered and respected for what it is; my perception is that the organization is lacking in vision and energy to further develop the Alamo. My two bits...
Good post, and good info, TF...in my brief comment..I meany to suggest that perhaps “some” feel the DRT isn’t diverse enough? No LBGT’s?
What "new direction" is going to make the management of the Alamo better? This sounds a whole lot like "new" math, or "common core" education.
I'm all for change if it's an improvement, but what sort of improvement do they expect to see from changing management?
This is puzzling, and it does indeed smack of something underhanded going on.
Sounds like he’s looking for a more lucrative deal for the state, history be damned.
Oh, I am sure that element is NOT present. And it is by it’s very nature foreign to the culture of Texas, past and present.
This is my gut feeling as well. It doesn't smell right.
