Utah House passes church-backed anti-discrimination bill [Mormon Church endorses]

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Mormon-church-backed anti-discrimination bill that protects LGBT Utah residents and religious rights received final approval at the state's Republican-controlled Legislature on Wednesday.

The House of Representatives voted 65-10 to pass the bill, which was only unveiled last week. The Senate passed it Friday.

The bill earned a rare endorsement from the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which helped fast-track the measure through the Legislature.

Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican and member of the church, has said he'll sign the bill.

Backstory is LDS inc (the Mormon church) held a press conf a few weeks ago that was a bait and switch. it talked about LBGT rights but also claimed ‘religious rights’ (for the LDS church). This came on the heels of them getting caught lying about why they excommunicated John Dehlin - an outspoken member who supports gay rights and questions LDS history.

Here is the bait and switch on this. The LDS church is a corporation sole, every business they own (billions and billions of dollars) is under the corporation. Even their high end mall in Salt Lake City is tax exempt (non-profit). They own insurance companies, bookstore, etc. all paid from tithing. The wording of the legistlation means ALL of their business would be exempt from the new law. However, say a privately owned Christian bookstore (and there are some) are not, while the LDS owned bookstores are.

Also, while the PR of the LDS church promotes ‘family values’ underneath they are more about control than family values. There has been a consistent change in their policy PR wise towards gays, in hopes of them stemming the tide of people leaving (however very few leave for political reasons, most leave for doctrinal/church history reasons).

The images are just to show the concept of Joseph translating. It's no different than all the Christian paintings of Jesus holding a lamb. Jesus wasn't an actual shepherd. But we get the idea.

You quote people that never actually saw Joseph doing the translation. Take David Whitmer for instance, who left the Church over a dispute with Joseph and became a bitter anti-Mormon. David Whitmer's story changed from one minute to the next. Not to mention he started his own church.

Which is interesting, because even though David Whitmer was bitter, angry, and even published material against the Church, he never denied seeing the angel or the plates.

That I have never at any time denied that testimony or any part thereof, which has so long since been published with that Book, as one of the three witnesses. Those who know me best, well know that I have always adhered to that testimony. And that no man may be misled or doubt my present views in regard to the same, I do again affirm the truth of all of my statements, as then made and published.
