Greece Demands Nazi War Reparations And German Assets Seizures As Creditor Squeeze Continues Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras revives claims for compensation in return for the crimes carried out by the Third Reich

By Mehreen Khan

11 Mar 2015 Greece's prime minister has demanded Germany pay back more than €160bn (£112bn) in Second World War reparations as his country is squeezed by creditors to overhaul its economy in return for vital bail-out funds. In an emotive address to his parliament, Alexis Tsipras said his government had a "duty to history, to the people who fought and to the victims who gave their lives to defeat Nazism." The Leftist government maintains it is owed more than €162bn - nearly half the value of its total public debt - for the destruction wrought during the Nazi occupation of Greece. "The government will work in order to honour fully its obligations. But, at the same time, it will work so that all of the unfulfilled obligations to Greece and the Greek people are met," said Mr Tsipras on Tuesday at a parliamentary debate on the creation of a reparations committee. Syriza's leader added the atrocities of the Nazi occupation remained "fresh in the memory" of Greek people and "must be preserved in the younger generations."

Most of the damages wasn’t done by the Nazis. It was done by the commie forefathers of the current government during the 1944-49 civil war. At one point, the Brits had to pull a full division away from fighting the Nazis to hold the government district of Athens and the port Piraeus . After WWII ended, the Brits passed the burden to the Americans.

The Marshall Plan was as much to benefit the US economy, as it was the Europeans! Because the US was the only major economy still functioning after WW2, that is where EVERYONE in Europe had to buy food and goods. The Marshall Plan made the US by far the largest economy in the world. That said, Canada benefited greatly from the post-war boom, selling mostly food and raw materials and welcoming educated, war-weary Europeans. Unfortunately, since Turd-owe Sr., we are getting mostly 3rd world uneducated non-English speakers who come to leech off the government teat (read: my tax dollars).

I think I understand this "reparations" business a little better now. Apparently it's people who never did anything being made to pay people who never had anything done to them for something somebody else did to somebody else a long time ago. For some inexplicable reason guilt is supposed to be involved as well. And moral outrage.

It sounds like a fun game for half of the players. The other half, not so much.

“This is entirely predictable. Even if Greece and Germany were allies in World War II, the Greeks would still find some reason to demand money from Germany. Because the Greek Welfare State is broke, has run out of its own money, has run out of easily accessible Other People’s Money, and Germany is a big pot of money waiting to be fleeced to continue the Greek transfer payment gravy train going”

No problem, The United States of Banks and Insurance companies did it in the U.S. in 08 and 09 and trafficking with extortion-care now.

Oh wait! Greece doesn’t have a D.H.S/irs gestapo force in the Euro.

According to James Burnham, the Cold War began with the Greek Communist revolt of 1944.

I’m beginning to think that ALL the good, hard-working Greeks emigrated to the U.S. All the Greeks I know here are hardworking folks with absolutely no “entitlement” mentality. The entitlement mentality abounds in Greece proper.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but many of the Greeks who emigrated to the US were from what is now Turkey, the western part of Anatolia.

My sister was an Army wife and she and her husband toured Greece in the early ‘50s.

As they went through the border, they noticed a car pulled over and damned near dismantled - paneling off the doors, etc., as well as luggage all over the place.

She asked one guard if they were looking for drugs. he said no, they were Germans and it was payback time.

The dark side of this is that we had no competition (other than militarily from the ROOSKIES) and got lazy and made some pretty junky stuff. Meanwhile the rest of the world built shiny, new, state-of-the-art factories and new stuff.

Maybe the last thing our WWII-era planes should have done before they were scrapped was to bomb our own factories!

I think that the real damage done to the country was during the civil war immediately after WWII.

About a billion of that post-war US assisstance money was expended on Canadian goods. I guess that would be around 12 to 14 billion at today’s rates.

No it isn’t; there is no defendant in this case, and few legitimate plaintiffs.

Why aren’t they chasing down Italy? Oh, they have no money either.

I guess that when their duly elected commie government decided to have a look-see on the “merely socialist” side of the fence, they couldn’t stand having to foot some of the responsibility for what they did to themselves - this is their idea of getting the bailout (after bailout) that they “deserve”.
