Kerry tells Republicans: you cannot modify Iran-U.S. nuclear deal

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Republicans who control Congress on Wednesday they would not be able to modify any nuclear agreement struck between the United States and Iran.

Kerry said he responded with "utter disbelief" to an open letter to Iran on Monday signed only by Republican senators that said any deal would only last as long as U.S. President Barack Obama, a Democrat, remains in office.

"When it says that Congress could actually modify the terms of an agreement at any time is flat wrong," Kerry, who has been negotiating a deal to rein in Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "You don't have the right to modify an agreement reached executive to executive between leaders of a country."

But Sen. Rand Paul, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016, told Kerry that any deal would need approval by Congress if it affected U.S. sanctions against Iran. Paul accused the Obama administration of trying to bypass Congress.

"The letter was to Iran but it should've been cc' d to the White House because the White House needs to understand that any agreement that removes or changes legislation will have to be passed by us," the senator said....

So, if Kerry is correct, could not Obama and Putin, executive to executive come to an agreement to sell Alaska back to Russia for 2 cents an acre? What rubbish.

Just what has been holding up this agreement over the last 4 years?

"Kerry said he responded with "utter disbelief"..."

From the man who, while an officer in the US military, during a time of war, secretly met with the Communist Vietnamese enemy and then testified before the US Congress in their behalf.

Could it be that he's in "utter disbelief" that unlike him, the Republican Senators did not contact an enemy to sell out America, but to threaten that enemy.

As an American I’m embarrassed for the world to see we have bozos running our country that don’t even understand our constitution or laws. Or don’t care.

Kerry had better go dig out his junior high school civics book He doesn’t appear to have the slightest notion of how our government works.

I think he knows both how it is supposed to work and also how it now really does work under a totalitarian democrat regime.

Silly FReeper! You are under the rediculous dilusion that our government recognizes that overbearing and restrictive relic of paper we once called The Constitution. Those old civic books have gone the way of those Korans at Gitmo.

I don't understand why executive orders as agreements with foreign nations are valid at all. The Constitution is very clear that the US Senate should Advise and Consent in negotiations with foreign nations, and any treaty needed a 2/3 majority to be ratified. There's no other way to make agreements with foreign nations.

Our founding fathers were very distrustful of entangling alliances and wanted to protect the nation from some egomaniac getting the US involved in alliances not to the benefit of the US.

Obama keeps claiming it’s not a treaty. That’s means its a nothing.

A non-binding agreement doesn’t have to be modified, it can just be ignored.

Of course Congress cannot modify a treaty. Who the hell thinks they can? They ratify. That’s it.

Does anyone read the Constitution? Or are we all Clintons, who think the rules don’t apply.

The leftward bias of the mainstream media has really been coming across in spades lately.

The more blatantly partisan the president and his administration becomes, the more strenuous the media's efforts to cover his ass have to become. This article is a perfect example.

For one thing, they can declare war and for another, they can tighten sanctions until Iran gives up the program (which it won’t do.)

It wouldn’t take that many bombs to destroy Iran’s economy.
