Secretary of State John Kerry says hes in utter disbelief over the letter to Iranian leaders led by Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and signed by 46 other Republican senators, warning any Iranian nuclear deal reached with the U.S. could be revoked by the next president or modified by Congress.
This letter ignores more than two centuries of precedent in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy, Kerry said Wednesday at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. This risks undermining the confidence that foreign governments in thousands of important agreements commit to with the United States.
In his 29 years as a Democratic senator from Massachusetts, Kerry said, he never heard of or even heard of being proposed anything comparable to this. He said senators have the right to voice dissent but doing so in a letter to foreign leaders was quite stunning.
Kerry, who once chaired the Foreign Relations Committee, also said the letter was factually incorrect.
Its incorrect when it says that Congress could actually modify the terms of the agreement at any time, he said. They dont have the right to modify an agreement reached, executive to executive, between the leaders of two countries.
During the hearing, Sen. Marco Rubio also tangled with Kerry over the issue of Irans influence in the U.S. fight against the Islamic State.
The Florida senator, who is weighing a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, said he believes much of the U.S. strategy in Iraq and Syria is being driven by a desire not to upset Iran amid sensitive nuclear negotiations.
All the facts contradict that, Kerry shot back.
Kerry said many of the details about the negotiations were classified but noted the talks were designed to curtail Irans nuclear program and the administration wasnt trying to reach a grand bargain that would normalize relations with the Islamic Republic.
This is about a nuclear weapon thats it, Kerry said.
Rubio, whose experience on the Foreign Relations panel could bolster his stature in a 2016 GOP presidential field that lacks a lot of foreign policy experience, also pressed Kerry on whether the negotiations with Iran were hurting U.S. ties to its Arab allies in the Middle East.
Kerry responded that he was keeping U.S. allies in the region updated on the status of the talks.
They weedled their way into power lying, fudging, cheating and making their own rules as they went along. Disgusting hypocrites, every single one.
Nuclear Proliferation Treaty via a wink and a handshake? NO THANKS.
Kerry did worse -
He negotiated with the N vietnamese in Paris, while we were at war, and he was still in the Armed Forces.
Utter disbelief
Now the weasly seven who did NOT sign it might say that.
Anyone with an ounce of common sense is in utter disbelief that this horse-faced jackass has a position of authority in our government.
Yep. Was bombing Libya ‘an agreement between the leaders of two countries’ type of thing, too?
John Kerry himself has gone visit our enemies during tense political unrest. Sandinistas?
What a joke.
Utter belief
Now he knows how WE feel every time he opens his mouth! :)
The man who committed treason, and met with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong in Paris is in “utter disbelief” over a letter?
John Kerry in utter disbelief over GOP letter to Iran
Well i am in utter disbelief that this traitor ever got into any posiyion of power in this Country...........
But negotiating with Ortega, well, that came under the “Pan-American” umbrella, doncha know, not the same thing at all, and besides it was just a political tug-of-war with Reagan and the White House at the time.
And that was by no means the only instance Jean-Francois Kerre` decided to do a little “free-lancing” in foreign policy.
I think there was a law on the books, probably still is, but it has largely become dead letter. The Logan Act has pretty much been shredded over the past couple of decades.
What a nightmare we are living.
“This risks undermining the confidence that foreign governments ... “
Is he talking about undermining Israel? Egypt? Libya?
They dont have the right to modify an agreement reached, executive to executive, between the leaders of two countries.
Why????? Why, when politicians parse words are they never called on it? The Senators plainly stated, PLAINLY, that when Obama was out of office the next President could modify or declare the executive action null.
There is no doubt that a President, or anyone else, cannot ratify a Treaty without a 2/3 majority in Congress. It shouldn’t even have to be brought up. Especially with a “Constitutional Scholar” in the White House.
Kind of ironic that he's now being heckled by anti-war protesters. You reap what you sow Johnny Boy.
good for him- Americans on the other hand are in utter disbelief that a TRAITOR was allowed to run for president, then later gets elected to a high position in our government-
Kerry is a drooling fool, a coward and a dumb ass. He is pathetic.
