~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, California

Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is a United States Navy weapons and munitions loading, storage and maintenance facility located in Seal Beach, California with detachments in Concord, Fallbrook, and San Diego, all also in California.

The command exists to provide base operating support to the Navy's ordnance mission. Command and tenant personnel provide munitions receipt, segregation, inspection, maintenance, storage, issue, and assessment services to Navy operating forces and other Department of Defense and homeland security entities. Overall, the command supports the provisioning of missiles, torpedoes, and other ordnance to a majority of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

NWS Seal Beach occupies 5,256 acres, has 230 buildings and 128 ammunition magazines providing 589,299 feet of ammunition storage space. Ammunition is moved from storage to the docks on 56 miles of railroad line and 80 miles of road. The base owns 130 pieces of railroad rolling stock and 230 trucks and trailers to move the ammunition which is loaded onto ships using six mobile cranes that can lift up to 90 tons.

The Weapons Station is also home to the West Coast site of the World War II Submarine Memorial. The Memorial is dedicated to the over 3000 submariners who lost their lives in United States submarines in the 52 submarines lost during WWII. There are also plaques dedicated to those who lost their lives in submarine accidents during the Cold War. The Memorial is located outside the main entrance to the Weapons Station on Seal Beach Boulevard and is accessible to the public.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

I did indeed Sally Forth today - temps in the high 50's, snow on the ground greatly diminished.

I had a meeting outside the Office in the morning so only got in about six hours today. We're expecting rain tomorrow and Wednesday - temps over 60.

I am just now printing out my homework.

Had to go home at lunch to get my Mom fed as my sister texted that Mom didn’t feel strong enough to make it to the kitchen for something to eat. I need to get her some electric wheels, and soon.

My nephew, MCPO Robert Collins, USN (Ret.), just posted the following image on Facebook:

This is my response to my Great-Nephew Michael on Facebook:

"Michael, one of the proudest things I did during my service in the Navy was standing the Chief of the Day Watch at NNMC, Bethesda, MD. I had the great privilege of raising and lowering our National Colors on those watches. Your Grandfather stood the OOD watch there a few years before my time. As such, he was the Officer in Charge at those Colors Ceremonies. You follow in a great tradition. God Bless and keep you, and God Bless the United States of America!"

BTW if you go one part of Seal Beach you could see in distance the base and also get flooded during our El Nino years that very true too

Oh, no! Hate to hear that she is having trouble getting up. That’s not good...and certainly not good for your peace of mind while she’s there alone.

I hope you can get her the “wheels” she needs...but how would she get herself into the chair?
