Just Mother Nature at work. When I mow close to the chicken run and scare up a field mouse that goes through their territory he will be devoured. Same thing with a song bird that gets in and tries to eat their scratch feed. Yep, meat eating chickens.

The word “family” gets thrown around a lot, but it does have a taxonomic definition.

Was the deer using a spinning reel and rod or casting a line with a tied fly on the end? Just wondering.

Came home tonight and saw 40+ turkeys roosting right along the treeline 30' -50' feet up.
They're usually further into the woods and lower.
Figured c'yotes scared 'em but maybe deer!

Deer are at an all time low in the U.P... The lack of pheasants downstate can be attributed in part to the shift workers (I've known) who road hunted every afternoon. Soon they were complaining about lack of birds, habitat and the piss poor job the DNR was doing. Add the turkey to the mix as they often parasitize nests. The northern U.P. has no turkeys and a good grouse population. We're supplemental feeding our deer to have at least a starter population to repopulate.

As a former government type - any figuring why the US GEOLOGIC Survey is setting up cameras near the nests?
“Hey Frank - I got this funding idea. Ya know those birds that go missing? I think we should study and make sure that little fractures aren’t opening in the earth and swallowing them up. Or maybe it’s geysers blowing them off to who knows wheres? Could be sinkholes. We could set up cameras and then sit back in the air-conditioned office and see what happens.”

Oh, no! Say it isn't so.
In my yard, they are nibbling on shrubs that are guaranteed to be unatractive to deer, but I haven't seen them devouring creatures -- yet.

One of our younger relatives is an expert with the new powerful compound hunting bows. He has killed a lot of deer, wild pigs, wild turkeys, an antelope and an elk with arrows shot from his bow.. His bow is so powerful most of the kills are all most instant with a powerful arrow slicing through the heart/lung area.
The critters usually drop at the impact spot or a few feet away. His 600 pound elk took two steps and went down after his arrow took out the critter’s heart and passed through.
Yet, cities and counties plagued with deer overpopulation or destructive wild pigs refuse to hire people like him to harvest the over population of critters.
