Alberta wages almost 25% higher than Canadian average
Economists, politicians and business leaders seek ways to bring wages down
Springtime is typically oilpatch bonus season. As the grass turns green, car dealerships and upscale stores tend to get busier.
This year is different. Bonuses if they exist at all are expected to be small. Wages have been frozen. Oilpatch workers are happy to have a job at all.
And that's the private sector. Public sector workers, like teachers and nurses, are on high alert as the provincial government makes increasingly loud noises about reopening their contracts to cut pay.
Economists are saying that Albertans have a problem: they make too much money. And not only is it unaffordable, it's hurting the province's competitive position in the global marketplace.

Is that ever some backwards thinking...
It seems economists are making too much money. I suppose it didn’t occur to them to find ways to raise the income of those at the bottom rather than tear down those at the top.
I can understand leftist economists and pols, but BUSINESS LEADERS!!! “Hey, we’re making too much money and living the good life...let’s put a stop to it” they’re basically saying.
Not only is that article asinine—if businesses are paying more to their workers than they can afford, wages will adjust—but the people commenting after it are just as stupid. Most of them are liberal/socialist idiots who have no clue how an economy works.
One idiot complained about Harper’s tax cuts that allowed rich corporations to hoard hundreds of millions of dollars. Really, dimwit? What do you think corporations do with the money they save from lower tax rates? Hint: it isn’t “hoarded”—it goes back into growing the business, which helps the overall economy.
Another shining example of utter stupidity was the comment that the higher average wage in Alberta means that there are more rich people, so everyone else is poorer. Seriously, dude, learn what an “average” is, and how economies work. Canada is not (yet) a communist dictatorship, where there truly are a few really rich people living like kings while everyone else scrabbles for scraps. In normal economies, the bulk of money is owned by the middle class.
It looks like the Canadian education system is just as bad, if not worse, than ours.
Government can only inhibit economies; it cannot improve them.
CBC viewers and liberal socialist idiots is a redundancy. Think NPR/PBS viewers to get an idea of the US version.
When a large group of people like this makes “too much money”, the law of supply and demand tends to kick into high gear to level things out a bit.
No such thing as making too much money, the market decides the limit. When you reach your peak, the market will let you know, “that’s enough”.
Envy.
You nailed it, and it has been this way for a long time. I also take more risks than a lot of others doing what I do in the middle of nowhere. This article was written by idiots or an idiot.
Ignorance of the labor shortage for skilled folks to work in places like Fort Murray. Yes the oil patch demand for folks is down now. But it wasn’t less than a year ago, and it will go up again.
Most folks don’t want to live above 55° Longitude, or work in the oil patch. Consequently work there pays more.
Sorry, Fort McMurray, that is....
