Obama to Netanyahu: 'OK, What’s your plan for Iran, then?'

Not sure why he’s mumbling about “viable alternatives” when the refrain from his own team over the past 24 hours, starting with Susan Rice, is that a bad deal with Iran is worse than no deal, which is precisely Netanyahu’s point. Bibi’s plan is clear enough, though: Keep the pressure on Tehran by keeping sanctions in place until they’re willing to give up more than just the 10-year temporary freeze that Obama’s currently asking for. O also complained here to the press that there was nothing new in Netanyahu’s speech, which is true — for a reason.

Good luck finding something new to say during a six-year rolling debate when you’re not allowed to delve into the only important recent development.

Obama did end up making his strongest argument for his own plan in the course of his shpiel here, that a deal that gives nuclear inspectors real eyes on the ground to track Iran’s program would give the west a better sense of whether they’re cheating by trying to build a bomb than we have now. As he told Reuters yesterday:

“If, in fact, Iran is willing to agree to double-digit years of keeping their program where it is right now and, in fact, rolling back elements of it that currently exist … if we’ve got that, and we’ve got a way of verifying that, there’s no other steps we can take that would give us such assurance that they don’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

The U.S. goal is to make sure “there’s at least a year between us seeing them try to get a nuclear weapon and them actually being able to obtain one,” Obama said in the interview, carefully timed by the White House a day ahead of Netanyahu’s polarizing speech to Congress.

If we’re not willing to attack their program now, we might as well try to improve our intelligence so that we’ll know for sure when an attack is necessary. (That’s what the “breakout” period is all about.) Just one problem: Realistically, the White House will never attack Iran. If you doubt that, go remind yourself that Obama’s deputies have actually boasted to reporters that the endless nuke negotiations with Iran have crippled Israel’s own ability to attack. Obama’s not going to wreck his own legacy-establishing rapprochement with Iran by trying to blow up their enrichment facilities, setting off a regional war, particularly when lots of defense experts believe that even a U.S. attack would merely set back the program rather than destroy it. Obama won’t strike unless he has absolutely no choice, and there’s no scenario before he leaves office where he’d have no choice, i.e. where Iran’s nukes would pose an immediate threat not just to Israel but to the U.S. The deal he’s working on is transparently a punt to the next president: Iran probably won’t cheat before Obama leaves office, and if they cheat once his successor is on the clock, hey, that’s his/her problem. And once Iran does “surprise” everyone by building a bomb, that can be laid at the feet of the UN’s inspectors in failing to smoke it out rather than at Obama’s feet for failing to attack. Best-case scenario if Iran tries to “break out” is that we’ll hit them with the harshest sanctions we can muster, as if that’ll stop them. Really, if Netanyahu’s determined to block them from building a weapon, he’d better have a battle plan of his own. At least until January 2017.

Iran is the same size as Europe... a huge country. Their nuclear industry is dug in all over the country. It is a country that in a lot of places looks like endless desert salt flats, bordered by Alp-sized mountains around some of the edges. You could hide Pittsburgh. Nobody is going to take out everything exclusively by air in one raid. Besides, the Iranians have a fairly sophisticated air defense system, and aerial refueling inside their airspace is out.

Anyone who thinks their efforts to enrich weapons grade materials slowed during these talks is nuts. Nukes? Sure about 10 would be required. Maybe two or three times. Nobody wants that. Targets? We cannot possibly hit them all. Remember the SCUD hunts in Iraq? In the meantime, they can hit at Israel.

Perhaps it would be safer to tak'em out of the oil business. The Russkis would LOVE that. That is something we can do in a day. Put a 10-ton JDAM down the Holy Well of Qum, that we can do in a day. Take out their refineries. That we can do in a day because they have very few! But Israel cannot accomplish any of these missions alone.

That is what all of this is about.

Those making so much noise about the ISIS losers in hopes that Iran will take over the Middle East for the fascists in Russia and southern Europe are demanding that PM Netanyahu reveal the plan to them. The best thing that could happen would be the permanent destruction and blockage of all of Iran’s oil infrastructure.

Covert, well funded operations to topple a teetering regime is a good start. Freezing all international assets, freezing all financial transactions and revoking all travel permits, to and out of the country are also good starters.

A lot of people don’t know Iran is in a historic drought. They’ve cut back on a lot of agriculture since they never bothered adapting irrigation technology.

Pay no attention to the concern troll foreign identity and international trade interests. The following is old news, much older than the dates below.

Also, ignore those who claim that any civilian would be running the show after our business, political and academic interests are cornered into going along with the fight. Generals have the know-how and would be in command.

“Obama said in the interview, carefully timed by the White House a day ahead of Netanyahu’s polarizing speech to Congress.”

What a strange time that speech setting out undisputed, basic, facts and logic can be “polarizing.”

Then again, to Nancy Pelosi who looked like she was possessed by evil spirits, perhaps it was polarizing.

Yes, the bunker busters are indeed super!

However, finding a target for them is important. We cannot immediately know where everything is in a country the size of Iran.

In regard to the IAF, they don't fly anything that can carry a bunker buster. That's our gig.

Iran is in a historic drought.

Whoa! That is important. Perhaps this desperate water situation they seem to be in is causing them to attempt to distract THEIR people.

The plan ordained in prophecy is the Psalm 83 War.

In this war, all of the nations that surround Israel are devastated and brought into such a state that they can no longer threaten Israel.

This is the plan whether Netanyahu wants it or not. He may or may not be in charge when it happens.

My understanding is that it will happen in September of this year. Read the article at the following link:

"We cannot immediately know where everything is in a country the size of Iran."

There's no requirement of immediacy. Iran has been mapped above and below ground, and that mapping has been maintained. The following also needs to be done, despite a fascist identity constituency and its nations of origin. A redo in Russia and southern Europe would also probably be in order.

Although bombing today is some thousands of times more accurate and thus effective than it was in WWII, Korea, or Vietnam, it is a good thing to remember how little those air campaigns actually affected the enemies' war efforts on the front lines.

E.G., NAZI war production reached a peak in late 1944! "Surgical strikes" etc. are PR terms, not military words. Today's smart bombs are truly amazing, but we (and others) have been bombing ISIS for over 6 months and they are still fighting, hopefully just not as efficiently.

Iran is nowhere as well developed or organized as NAZI Germany was, but it has a similar population, well developed armed forces, and in general is quite a few cuts above Third World status. In other words, we are not going to knock them out overnight. Think "dieing rattlesnake."

As far as "underground facilities" go, I would not assume we know where ALL of them are. The Iranians were masters of dirty tricks and nasty surprises in 500 BC. Also try and remember these Worthy Oriental Gentlemen were our staunch allies until Jimmy fell in love with fellow anti-semite, the Ayatollah Khomeini, whom he conflated with an O.T. prophet.

BTW, thanks for a very informative link. I hope the superannuated dingbat millionaires who represent us in Congress and their Left Wing staffs are as well informed.
