The fall in the crude oil prices hurt the Russian economy far worse than the sanctions. The oil prices is the fundamental problem which Mr. Putin has failed to resolve in 15 years.

The sanctions following the acquisition of the Crimea populated with ethnic Russians, who have been generally happy of this, is a good explanation of the economic hardship. Suffering becomes justified with this.

The economy will rise again sooner or later, but years of hardship will bring a gain.

Correction: the problem that Putin has failed to resolve is not the oil prices themselves, but the Russian economic dependence on them.
