Rumours out of Washington suggest that US ambassador John Koenig will be replaced by, Kathleen Doherty, the current Chargé dAffaires at the US Embassy in Rome, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Tuesday.
It said that according to well-informed sources in Washington, Koenig, whose three-year term expires in the coming months, would take over as director of the diplomatic academy at the State Department.
It added that Dohertys appointment had not yet been announced by the White House until it had been ratified by the Senate. The US embassy in Nicosia said on Monday it could not comment on who would replace Koenig.
According to the State Department website, Kathleen Doherty, a member of the Senior Foreign Service, assumed her duties as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs in September 2011. Her portfolio includes responsibility for managing relations with the European Union and Western Europe. Previously she served as the Director, Office of European Union and Regional Affairs.
Prior to returning to Washington DC in 2010, she was Counselor for Economic Affairs in the US Embassy in London. Her other overseas assignments include Economic Counselor in the US Embassy in Moscow, Economic Officer in the US Embassy in Rome and in the US Consulate in Sao Paolo, and Consular Officer in the Dominican Republic.
She speaks Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and has an M.Sc from the London School of Economics and a BA from Colgate University.
