Dog Owners Nervous in Wake of Pet Food Lawsuit

A lawsuit filed against the maker of a popular dog food has triggered concerns among California pet owners.

Frank Lucido of Discovery Bay, a community in Northern California’s Eastern Contra Costa County, said his 8-year-old bulldog, Dozier, died three weeks after Lucido switched his pet’s diet to Purina’s Beneful dog food.

On Feb. 5, Lucido sued Nestle Purina PetCare Company in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, alleging the dog food contains propylene glycol, which the suit said is an animal toxin used in automobile antifreeze; and mycotoxins, a group of toxins produced by fungus that occurs in grains.

Lucido also said his 11-year-old Labrador, Remo, and 4-year-old German Shepherd, Nella, are still recovering from kidney failure, lethargy and diarrhea.

"We have a dog that is still on a touch-and-go situation right now, and a decision might have to be made and I’m kind of dreading that right now," Lucido added.

The suit seeks unspecified damages, and a guarantee that Purina’s products are “safe for dogs.”

Probably correct. My bud has had his dog poisoned by neighbors/people in the neighborhood.

I’ve been feeding my Labs only Beneful weight control for about five years, and they’re both healthy.

I’m a bad boy, I feed my puppy Costco’s Natures Domain dry and supplement it with chicken and rice that I have cooked for him. Anyone else find themselves turning into their parents?

My dog eats what I eat, and I refuse to eat Dog Food. I try to limit her intake. When the warm weather returns I’m putting her on a diet and exercise regiment. She had pizza tonight.

Like all women that move in with me, they get fat.

My two Golden Retriever puppies are getting Purina large breed formula puppy chow. Doing extremely well on it. My last Golden went from Puppy Chow to Dog Chow to Senior Chow and lived 12 healthy years.

What do Freepers feed their dogs?

13 years the same canned dog food. She won’t eat anything else but Nutro MAX lamb, chicken & rice. Tried other brands and other food mixtures of MAX and she turns up her nose and walks away.

I am thinking of changing to senior from adult she eats now, keeping the same flavor and ingredients. We’ll see. She is so fussy. Any change is major with her.

Ethylene glycol is in anti-freeze not propylene glycol. World of difference. Ethylene G is sweet and dogs will lap it up if they get access to it. Kills them quick. Don’t drain your radiator out on the driveway without hosing it out into the grass etc.
