Sen. Barbara Mikulski to retire, longest serving woman in Congress

(Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md, center, speaks about the recent Metro subway fire earlier this month, as Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., left, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md. center right, and Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. wait to speak.)

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, the longest serving woman in the history of Congress, is announcing her retirement, Democratic officials say.

The 78-year-old Maryland Democrat, now in her fifth term, is set to make a statement at a news conference in Fells Point in Baltimore later Monday. Her retirement could set off a race among potential candidates to succeed her, including Rep. Chris Van Hollen and former Gov. Martin O'Malley, who is considering a bid for president.

Mikulski became the longest-serving woman in the history of Congress in 2012. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 and has served in the Senate since 1987. Mikulski is up for re-election next year, but has declined in the past to say whether she would run for what would be a sixth term. The deadline for filing is in January 2016.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss her plans.

I didn't know she was a woman. Was her wife on hand for the festivities?

There are way too many who have been there too long. Term limits would solve the problem; it would also be helpful to get rid of these mounds of useless flesh if there was no pension for their fat, lazy asses.

“Term limits would solve the problem; it would also be helpful to get rid of these mounds of useless flesh if there was no pension for their fat, lazy asses. “

You would not need term limits if you simply made any elected service a temporary position w/o any pension or any other benefits! Our Founding Fathers never considered serving as an elected official as a permanent situation. Now instead of getting “service” from our elected officials, we are getting “serviced!”

Got the glorious news this morning on e-mail!

MARYLAND PING

This thing (freak) needs brought to Justice. Even though her terms will go down in the annals of loser-dom, she should spend the rest of her miserable existence in prison for her her many crimes against humanity. Maryland is THE Freak state. Escape while you still can.

So Mikulski can now nap at home, versus the Senate chamber or a committee room. How quickly does the O’Malley for President exploratory effort become a Senate campaign?

With any luck at all she’ll retire in Cuba, where she belongs. She’ll fit right in.

Adios Barb! All that time in The Senate and what did you accomplish?

She can retire with her partner to their home. It was custom built: no studs whatsoever. It's all tongue-in-groove.
