making a Shiva call is more personable and is a Mitzvah, perhaps that is his plan.

Shiva is awesome. It’s a remarkable tradition, both for how it pushes the loved ones to what you really should be doing during this time (mourning, loving) rather than all the side junk non-Jews generally get stuck with during this time (funeral planning, paperwork), and for the way the loved ones pull together. I have a lot of Jewish friends and one of the things in the back of my head is the knowledge that when their parents die I have slightly different duties because of Shiva, especially with the friend whose parent regularly invite me for Passover.
