He’s a smart guy, and has suffered public losses. Ever think its to give the family a chance to have a funeral for the actual man, and not help it become some kind of “Captain Kirk at Spock’s funeral” story?

I’m sure he will pay his respects in the way he thinks is best for him and for Nimoy’s family.

You nailed it. No one is going to blame Shatner for not skipping out on the Red Cross Ball. But no one would blame him if he did.

Shatner does not want to turn his friend’s funeral into a circus. That’s all.

Makes sense, especially since both are Jews, whose funeral and mourning customs are a little different. It’s likely the Friday death, Sunday funeral is also in accord with Jewish custom.
