Are Washington Republicans Incompetent?
PowerLine ^ | February 27, 2015 | John Hinderaker

It is almost unbelievable how badly Congressional Republicans have botched their opposition to President Obama’s illegal executive amnesty and the funding of the Department of Homeland Security. The House, under John Boehner’s direction, did the right thing: it passed a bill that fully funded DHS, but barred spending to implement the amnesty that has now been declared illegal by a federal court. The action then moved to the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tried repeatedly to bring the House measure to the floor for a vote. Four times, the Democrats filibustered the DHS funding bill.

As a result of the Democrats’ filibuster, DHS was in danger of running out of money. That put Republicans in a strong position. All they had to do was…nothing. If they didn’t blink, pressure on the Democrats to fund DHS would prove irresistible. It’s not for nothing the voters gave the GOP a majority, right?

Instead, Mitch McConnell backed off. He gave in to Harry Reid’s demands, even though Reid was surely bluffing, and the Senate passed a “clean” DHS funding bill that did nothing to block the illegal amnesty.

Somewhere along the way, these two have completely lost their balls. Whether they were taken to a “BACK ROOM” and was neutered, or that’s what they were to begin with, no one will ever know. Their idea that in order to have a good government is to “COMPROMISE” on everything, means that we will continue to lose our rights, one day at a time.

The curse, the sickness is the 17th Amendment.

That our senators respond as readily to popular whims, pressures, and media distortions as any congressman is a symptom, not the cause of our troubles.

Along with the Democrats, absolutely. Why do you think this nation is in such a mess? Political incompetency, greed, corruption and selfishness.

One man’s (or group’s) perceived incompetence is another man’s (or group’s) agenda.

Asking if these two are weak and ineffective is a rhetorical question. Everyone knows they are. They are both bad. While Boehner at times seems marginally better than McConnell, it’s probably only because there is a solid conservative contingent in the House pushing him in that direction. The conservative contingent in the Senate is too microscopic to have an effect on McConnell.

Why are there headlines like this? The Republican leadership didn't want any other outcome. The people who are incompetent are the ones voting for them thinking they'll oppose Obama.

Funding of DHS at any level is the WRONG thing to do for a Constitutionalist.

Best is to scrap the filibuster altogether. The filibuster has degenerated into a Democrat tool against opposition only useful when it permits a minority Democrat party to block a majority Republican party and to be scrapped when the Democrats have the majority and reinstated when the Republicans are again in the majority. The filibuster served for a long long time as a device to slow down hasty consideration of bills. Now it is only a hindrance to one part of the Senate. Best of all would be to repeal the 17th Amendment. The filibuster used to substitue, lamely but it helped, for the destruction of the previous Constitutional system wrought by the original process for selection of Senators.
