I wish I could have made the same argument back in the late sixties when state after state started making no fault divorce the law of the land. That was the first assault in the ongoing degradation of marriage—unless you count the decade earlier development of the birth control pill.
No fault divorce was the real kicker, IMHO. With divorce so easy, and marriage, especially with children, being a high liability, there was less reason to actually bother with getting married.
