My boss told me that in her old neighborhood, people used to pass around the same three kids for tax and welfare checks. It must be they never check SS numbers to see if they've been used.
I'm sure they don't care. The more people dependent on the government, the more power in the hands of bureaucrats.

One would think so. When I made a typo in my sons SSN the efile was rejected and I had to correct the error.

however, I am not sure if the system would catch the same SSN on more than one return.

Indeed they are. I made a typo when entering my daughter's S.S. number and the return was immediately rejected.

There’s a simple solution to this and the wails of protest would be heard from every race-baiter and liberal (but I repeat myself). Flat tax. No deductions, no rebates, no EITC.

Your observations from the ‘street’ are quite correct and the activity is mainly illegal but because they are our ‘poor’ and deserve our sympathy, nothing will be done to track or thwart it.

They do keep track of the SSNs, and they know which ones are used multiple times. They just don't ever prosecute. Too busy going after conservative groups trying to gain non-profit status to bother with this.

Aren't SSN's required for all dependents?

Yes. SSNs are required, but the fraud comes in because people use the SSNs of people who cannot qualify as dependents. Dependents must be immediate family by birth, adoption, step, etc.

I had people give SSNs they said were for dependents who were first cousins, or uncles or aunts. I'd tell them those didn't qualify and what relations did qualify. They'd just say make the first cousin a brother or sister, etc. Big tax preparers prepare a return based on the information provided.

That was more than ten years ago. I'd warn the folks that they could get in trouble, but they knew better I did even then.

Apparently little or nothing is checked by the IRS. There have been news stories about Mexicans in the US who list numerous non-existent out-of-country children that are never verified.

This has been going on for YEARS...

Even since the Bush tax credit for $1,500 per child if you are low enough income...

Tax Credit meaning you get $1,500 per child regardless of how much federal tax you paid...(2014 is now $1,000 credit )

Also just to REALLY piss off people...

Thousands of US child citizens living in Mexico are being used as a tax credit also...
